Hawks hand Flames' men first loss of 2015 (Week 4 Monday SBL wrap)

THE Perry Lakes Hawks' men handed the Rockingham Flames their first loss of the 2015 SBL season on Monday while the Flames' women continued their unbeaten start to their championship defence.

The Easter Round of SBL action began back on Thursday night and concluded on Monday afternoon with the Rockingham Flames hosting the Perry Lakes Hawks at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The results saw the Flames' women score a 66-42 win over the Hawks while Perry Lakes' men beat Rockingham 100-90.

Rockingham's women have now won their opening four matches in their championship defence while Perry Lakes slips to a 2-2 record having now lost two straight matches after opening the year with successive wins.

Rockingham put together some remarkable defence in both the second and fourth quarters, holding Perry Lakes to just four points in the second period and five in the fourth to see the Flames end up winning by 24 points.

Last year's MVP Samantha Whitcomb was outstanding again for the Flames with 26 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals while shooting 9-of-20 from the field and 6-of-14 from three-point territory.

Jacinta Bourne also contributed 15 points and eight rebounds for Rockingham while Darcee Garbin was missing, and in her absence Vanessa Michael earned a start and pulled in seven boards.

Kate Williams also added 11 points and five assists off the bench while Talisia Bourne finished with six points, four rebounds and four assists.

Lauren Jeffers did all she could for the Hawks finishing with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kassi Conditt also had 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots with Danika Pisconeri finishing with six points and nine boards.

Perry Lakes then recorded its second win of the men's SBL season downing Rockingham by 10 points and handing the Flames their first loss of the campaign following four straight victories.

And in the men's contest on Easter Monday, the Flames did appear in control for much of the game leading by a point at quarter-time and then dominating the second quarter with 27 points to just 12 from Perry Lakes to lead 49-33 at half-time.

The Hawks then got that deficit back to 10 points heading into the fourth period but they still had plenty of work to do. And the result was Perry Lakes delivering its best quarter of basketball for the season with 41 points to end up not only winning, but doing so by 10 points.

Bryton Hobbs led the charge for the Hawks finishing the game with 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while hitting 5-of-11 from downtown.

Ryan Smith also had a strong game with 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists before fouling out in the dying stages. He shot 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point territory.

Ben Purser finished with 20 points, seven boards and six assists while playing almost 44 minutes despite starting on the bench. He shot 7-of-15 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Cooper Land also came off the bench for the Flames and finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Ryan Godfrey contributed 23 points hitting 3-of-6 from three-point territory with Taylor Land adding 14 points and nine assists, Tom Remmerswaal 10 points and 10 boards, and Travis Moore eight points.
