Big milestone wins for Wolves, Buccaneers (Week 4 Men's SBL Wrap)

THE South West Slammers and Joondalup Wolves remain the two unbeaten men's SBL teams after four rounds with the Wolfpack and Geraldton Buccaneers scoring big wins to celebrate milestones for their captains over the Easter Weekend.

The Wolves won their fourth straight game to start the season on Thursday night beating the Stirling Senators to celebrate the 300th SBL game of captain Seb Salinas.

Buccs captain Mat Wundenberg then celebrated his 300th match with Geraldton with a big win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Saturday night.

The end result of the weekend's action means that the Slammers and Wolves are the last two remaining teams with the Rockingham Flames losing to the Perry Lakes Hawks on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Goldfields Giants remain winless and the East Perth Eagles continue to struggle in their championship defence.

The Easter round got underway on Thursday night with the Willetton Tigers beating the Lakeside Lightning 95-79 at Willetton Basketball Stadium, the South West Slammers downing the Mandurah Magic 113-94 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Joondalup Wolves defeating the Stirling Senators 123-93 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

Then in the four men's clashes on Saturday night, the Perth Redbacks won a thriller 85-82 over the East Perth Eagles at Curtin Stadium, the Geraldton Buccaneers beat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 112-82 at Active West Stadium, the South West Slammers downed the Goldfields Giants 107-74 at Eaton Recreation Centre and the Rockingham Flames won a heart stopper 107-106 over the Cockburn Cougars at Wally Hagan Stadium.

The Easter Round of SBL action concluded on Monday afternoon with the Rockingham Flames hosting the Perry Lakes Hawks at Mike Barnett Sports Complex. It was the Hawks who prevailed 100-90 to give the Flames their first defeat of 2015.

After four rounds, the South West Slammers (7-0) and Joondalup Wolves (4-0) sit atop the SBL standings ahead of the Geraldton Buccaneers (5-1), Willetton Tigers (4-1), Rockingham Flames (4-1), Cockburn Cougars (3-3), Mandurah Magic (3-3) and Perry Lakes Hawks (2-3).

Just outside the top eight are the Perth Redbacks (2-4), Lakeside Lightning (1-4), Stirling Senators (1-4), Kalamunda Eastern Suns (1-4) and East Perth Eagles (1-5), The Goldfields Giants (0-5) sit in last position.

There were plenty of standout individual performances across the weekend starting on Thursday night when Kyle Armour was the star for the Tigers ending up with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while shooting an efficient 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Corey Easley added 15 points and four rebounds from the bench while Damien Scott had 14 points, five boards and four assists. Ephrem Davis had 12 points, 12 boards and four blocks.

Jordan Swing led the way for the Lightning finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Luke Thomas contributed 17 points and 13 boards.

Tre Nicholls had another big scoring night for the Slammers ending up with 28 points, three assists and three steals shooting 12-of-23 from the field.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson also finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals while Jordan Hickert added 19 points and six boards off the bench.

Clive Weeden added another 13 points and eight rebounds while Wade Hitchcock scored 11 points and Brian Voelkel pulled in 15 rebounds to go with five assists.

Paul Hafford did all he could for the Magic with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists with Taylor Mullenax finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds, Ben Smith 14 points and seven boards, and Jarrad Jackson 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Trian Iliadis had a big night for the Wolves leading the way in the win over the Senators finishing with 32 points and six rebounds while captain Seb Salinas celebrated his 300th SBL game in style with 24 points, seven boards and seven assists while hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Rob Huntington also finished with 19 points and seven boards for the Wolves with Kevin Davis contributing 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Kyle Lindbergh worked hard for the Senators with 22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks while Cody Ellis finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Ryan Woodbury also had 17 points for Stirling and Austin Bruton 16.

And on Saturday night, Marshall Brown had a good performance for the Redbacks with 25 points and seven rebounds while shooting 9-of-18 from the floor.

Jarrad Prior also had 15 points while hitting 5-of-7 from downtown with Ray Turner adding 11 points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots and two assists.

Dennis Tawhiti added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Redbacks, Adam Johnston eight points, seven boards and three assists, Ezra Nikora eight points and Joel Wagner five points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Sunday Dech finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles with Jamie Barnett adding 21 points and three boards. Drew Williamson added 10 points, six assists and four boards while Rhys Vague contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Joe-Alan Tupaea also worked hard for East Perth with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.

Mat Wundenberg had a terrific night as well in his 300th appearance for the Buccaneers finishing with 15 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists while shooting 6-of-9 from the field.

Bennie Lewis top-scored for the Buccs with 29 points with Daniel Thomas contributing 20 points and six assists, Quincy Hankins-Cole 17 points and seven rebounds, Carter Cook 14 points and Aaron Ralph 12 to go with five boards.

Lien Phillip did all he could for the Eastern Suns with 24 points and 15 rebounds with Jaarod Holmes contributing 22 points and seven boards, and Kevin Anthony 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Tre Nichols again top-scored for the Slammers with 26 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Trent Worthington contributed 20 points and nine rebounds while Clive Weeden had 16 points and six rebounds, Ty Harrelson 13 points and six assists, Brian Voelkel a triple-double made up of 12 points, 20 rebounds, 12 assists and four steals, and Wade Hitchcock 11 points.

Jacob Holmen top-scored for the Giants with 23 points to go with eight rebounds while Mathiang Muo finished with 15 points and nine boards, and Jay Bowie 14 points and seven rebounds.

And in the men's contest on Easter Monday, Bryton Hobbs led the charge for the Hawks finishing the game with 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while hitting 5-of-11 from downtown.

Ryan Smith also had a strong game with 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists before fouling out in the dying stages. He shot 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point territory.

Ben Purser finished with 20 points, seven boards and six assists while playing almost 44 minutes despite starting on the bench. He shot 7-of-15 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Cooper Land also came off the bench for the Flames and finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Ryan Godfrey contributed 23 points hitting 3-of-6 from three-point territory with Taylor Land adding 14 points and nine assists, Tom Remmerswaal 10 points and 10 boards, and Travis Moore eight points.
