SBL Players of the Week

The week five Men’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Ray Turner of the Perth Redbacks.

For those who have seen Ray Turner first hand, they would know that with the skill and athleticism he possesses it does not come as a shock he has put together such a ridiculous stat line like the one on Saturday night when the Redbacks defeated the Goldfields Giants 122 to 108 at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

Turner thrived on the big stage in front of a full stadium at Kalgoorlie to record a game high 45 points, 20 rebounds and 2 assists.

Turner shot an impressive 73% from the field while 8 of his rebounds were at the offensive end of the floor.

The 6’9, 105kg power forward hailing from Houston Texas now has a season average of 25 points and 17 rebounds per game and with those kind of numbers he has to be a major candidate for this year’s league MVP.

Redbacks fans will be hoping Turner can continue his form and push the Redbacks up the standings where they currently sit in eighth position with a record of 3 wins and 4 losses.

Other considerations for this week’s award included;

Jay Bowie (Goldfields), Marshall Brown (Perth), Jordan Swing (Lakeside), Carter Cook (Geraldton),  Bennie Lewis (Geraldton), Thomas Remmerswaal (Rockingham), Eric Milam (Cockburn), Taylor Land (Rockingham),  Cooper Land (Rockingham), Seva Chan (Kalamunda), Trian Iliadis (Joondalup), Corey Easley (Willetton), Kyle Lindbergh (Stirling), Bryton Hobbs (Perry Lakes), Luke Thomas (Lakeside). Rhett Della Maddalena (Mandurah) & Rhys Vague (East Perth).

The week five Women’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Casey Mihovilovich of the Mandurah Magic.

The Magic are flying so far in 2015 holding top spot in the standings with an undefeated record of six straight games with much of their success coming through the red hot form of Casey Mihovilovich.

Mihovilovich is currently putting up similar numbers to her 2011 league MVP year, leading the league in steals with 4.3 per game and sitting third in average points with 22.2 per game.

On Friday night in front of her home crowd on the centre court which has been named in her honour, Milo dominated against the Lightning to record 30 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 9 steals to lead her team to a ten point victory 67-57.

Many predicted the Magic would be in playoff calculations in 2015, however after their perfect start to the season they have stamped their authority on the competition and are now serious contenders.

The Magic women have faced off in four grand finals in their SBL history (03’, 05’, 06’ & 09’), however a WSBL championship has eluded them.

Other considerations for the award included;

Ashleigh Grant (Lakeside), Amber Land (Stirling), Darcee Garbin (Rockingham), Samantha Whitcomb (Rockingham), Deanna Smith (Cockburn), Rebecca Mercer (Joondalup), Stephanie Jones (East Perth), Louella Tomlinson (Willetton), Jessie Edwards (Kalamunda), Katie Loberg (Cockburn) & Briana Klasztorny (Mandurah).
