Stunning weekend from Turner; Eagles fall to bottom (Week 7 Men's SBL Wrap)

PERTH Redbacks import Ray Turner delivered two remarkable performances over the Anzac Day weekend of men's SBL action but it only led to one victory while the defending champion East Perth Eagles continue to struggle.

Turner had a weekend for the ages with the Redbacks finishing with 45 points and 22 rebounds in a win over the Perry Lakes Hawks and then 58 points and 26 boards in a double overtime loss to the Willetton Tigers.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have now lost nine straight matches to fall to the bottom of the standings after losing to the Goldfields Giants while the South West Slammers and Geraldton Buccaneers kept winning.

The Round 7 men's SBL action began on Friday night with the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 123-82 and the Stirling Senators won a thriller 105-103 over the Lakeside Lightning at Warwick Leisure Centre.

And in the men's Anzac Day matches, it started in the afternoon with the Mandurah Magic beating the Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames 111-103 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Then in the evening, the S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers beat the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 107-91 at Active West Stadium and the Bethanie Stirling Senators downed the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 96-80 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The Perth Redbacks also scored a 108-91 win over the Perry Lakes Hawks at Curtin Stadium and the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers downed the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 103-85 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

There were then two men's fixtures on Sunday with the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants beating the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 106-97 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, and the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers downed the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars 112-100 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

And then in the men's contest on Monday, the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers ended up beating the Perth Redbacks 123-120 after two overtime periods at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The weekend's results leave the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers (10-1) on top of the standings ahead of the S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers (9-1), Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves (7-2) and Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (7-2).

The Mandurah Magic (7-3) are then in fifth position ahead of the Bethanie Stirling Senators (5-4), Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars (5-5) and the Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames (5-5).

The Perth Redbacks (4-6) are just outside the top eight followed by the Lakeside Lightning (3-6), Perry Lakes Hawks (2-7), Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants (1-8), Kalamunda Eastern Suns (1-8) and Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles (1-9).

There were some remarkable individual performances right across the weekend starting on Friday night with Kevin Davis top-scoring for Joondalup with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Seb Salinas also had 23 points, seven boards, three assists and two steals for the Wolves on the back of hitting 9-of-12 from the floor and a scorching 5-of-6 from downtown.

Trian Iliadis added 23 points, five assists and three assists for the Wolfpack with Rob Huntington adding 20 points and six boards, and Damian Matacz 13 points.

Seva Chan worked hard for the Eastern Suns and top-scored with 21 points with Jaarod Holmes contributing 17 points, Lien Philip 17 points and eight rebounds, and Kevin Anthony 12 points, six boards, three blocks and two steals.

The Senators' men won a thriller by two points in an exciting and high-scoring affair over the Lightning at home thanks to a remarkable Cody Ellis buzzer-beating three.

On top of hitting the game-winning shot, Ellis had 31 points, five assists, five steals and three rebounds for the night for Stirling while Kyle Lindbergh top-scored with 32 points, 12 boards, seven assists and five blocks while shooting 13-of-19 from the field.

Bruton added 17 points and three assists for the Senators as well with Tom Witts scoring nine points, Ryan Woodbury eight and Sean Gilmore eight off the bench.

Jordan Swing top-scored for the Lightning with 31 points, six rebounds and three assists with Luke Thomas contributing 18 points, 12 boards and seven assists.

Jarrad Prue added 15 points and 23 rebounds off the bench with Corey Martin finishing with 15 points and five assists, and Brad Jackson 11 points and four boards.

Then on Anzac Day, Rhett Della had a big afternoon for the Magic with 31 points, 13 rebounds and four assists while shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 11-of-15 from the foul line.

Ben Smith finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds as well for Mandurah while Taylor Mullenax contributed 17 points and 12 boards, Trent Gerovich 17 points, Paul Hafford 13 points and six rebounds, and Jarrad Jackson 12 points, five assists, four steals and three boards.

Cooper Land did all he could for the Flames finishing with 24 points, 16 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocked shots with Ryan Godfrey adding 23 points.

Travis Moore contributed 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Rockingham with Jarryd Griffin adding 11 points, four rebounds and two assists, and Taylor Land 11 points, six assists and three steals.

Bennie Lewis led the way for the Buccaneers with 28 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots while shooting 9-of-18 from the field, 2-of-5 from three-point range and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Aaron Ralph contributed 27 points and 10 rebounds for Geraldton while Carter Cook added 20 points, three boards, three assists and two steals, Mat Wundenberg 10 points and 17 rebounds, Quincy Hankins-Cole 10 points and 12 boards, and Daniel Thomas nine points and eight assists.

Jacob Holmen did all he could to try and get the Giants over the line finishing with 27 points and 14 rebounds while Jay Bowie contributed 16 points, Mathiang Muo 15 points and six rebounds, Russell Hurst 12 points and 10 boards, and Edin Zunic eight points and six rebounds.

Kyle Lindbergh finished with 17 points, five assists, five blocked shots, three rebounds and two steals for Stirling while Cody Ellis contributed 17 points, seven boards, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Austin Bruton added 13 points and six rebounds for the winning Senators while Ashley Litterick finished with 13 points, six boards, four assists and two blocks.

Jamie Barnett top-scored for the Eagles who were again without Tom Jervis finishing with 19 points and four rebounds with Drew Williamson adding 17 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Sunday Dech contributed 14 points and 12 boards for East Perth as well with Joe-Alan Tupaea finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Ray Turner had a remarkable night for the Redbacks and led his team to the win with 45 points, 22 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 16-of-29 from the field and 13-of-16 from the foul line.

Ben Smith also contributed 25 points and four rebounds for Perth while Joel Wagner finished with 12 points, seven assists and six boards, and Ashley Stephens nine points and five rebounds.

Bryton Hobbs tried to keep pace with the efforts of Tucker for the Redbacks and he finished with 35 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Hawks while shooting 15-of-28 from the floor and 2-of-5 from long range.

Ben Purser added 18 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots for Perry Lakes with Ryan Smith contributing 15 points and 11 boards, and James Elliott 12 points and four rebounds.

The Tigers beat the Eastern Suns by 18 points at Kalamunda with Willetton best served by Damien Scott who finished the evening with 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Kyle Armour also contributed 16 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Tigers while Ephrem Davis added 17 points, 11 boards and three blocked shots.

Nic Cody added 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals as well for Willetton while shooting an efficient 5-of-8 from the floor and Corey Easley chipped in with 17 points and 12 boards off the bench.

Kevin Anthony had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Eastern Suns with Lien Phillip having a monster night with 23 points and 20 rebounds.

Seva Chan continued his impressive form with the Suns with another 18 points and five rebounds with Jaarod Holmes contributing eight points, five boards and four steals, and Geordie Murray eight points off the bench.

And on Sunday, Tre Nichols delivered a stunning offensive performance for the Slammers with 48 points, three rebounds and three steals on the back of shooting 17-of-28 from the floor, 5-of-10 from downtown and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Brian Voelkel then delivered his third triple-double of the season with 17 points, 24 rebounds and 10 assists also for South West.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson contributed 22 points and seven assists as well while Clive Weeden scored 13 points and pulled in five boards.

Gavin Field top-scored for the Cougars with 33 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots while hitting 11-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-8 from three-point range.

Najee Lane contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds for Cockburn with Eric Milam 18 points, seven boards, three steals and two assists.

Jacob Holmen was the star of the evening for the Giants finishing with 43 points and 15 rebounds while shooting 17-of-31 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Mathiang Muo added 24 points and seven rebounds against the team he helped win last year's SBL championship, and he shot 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point territory.

Jay Bowie contributed 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Goldfields while Shamus Ballantyne had nine points, eight assists and five boards off the bench.

Joe-Alan Tupaea added 17 points for East Perth with Drew Williamson contributing 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Sunday Dech scored 17 points for the Eagles as well while Jamie Barnett added 11 points and Brighton Pass 10.

Finally on Monday, the Tigers prevailed over the Redbacks in a double overtime classic.

Nic Cody ended up top-scoring for the Tigers with 26 points and eight rebounds while shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 10-of-16 from the foul line.

Damien Scott added 25 points, seven rebounds, six steals and two blocked shots for Willetton as well with Kyle Armour finishing with 18 points and 13 assists, Ephrem Davis 17 points and eight boards and Mitch Clarke 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Corey Easley contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots off the bench also for the Tigers.

Ray Turner had a remarkable performance for the Redbacks finishing with 58 points, 26 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 21-of-34 from the field and 16-of-18 from the free-throw line.

Ben Smith added 24 points and eight boards for Perth while Jarrad Prior contributed 15 points and five rebounds, and Joel Wagner nine points, 11 assists and five boards.
