Flames, Tigers, Wolves and Magic all do battle (Week 9 Women's SBL Preview)

THE top four women's SBL teams all meet one another in Week 9 action starting on Friday night with the Flames hosting the Wolves, and then on Saturday night the Magic also host the Tigers in just two of the six important match ups.

The women's Week 9 action begins with two matches on Friday night starting with the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames taking on the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Also on Friday night, the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars play the Stirling Senators at Wally Hagan Stadium.

There are then four women's matches on Saturday night with the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves facing the Perry Lakes Hawks at Joondalup Basketball Stadium while the Mandurah Magic also battle the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Also at 6pm on Saturday night, the Schweigen East Perth Eagles play the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and then at 6.30pm, the Perth Redbacks face the Lakeside Lightning at Curtin Stadium.

The round begins with a top-of-the-table clash at Rockingham between the 2014 champions the Flames and the 2013 champions the Wolves.

The Flames bounced back from losing their first game of the season two weeks ago to the Mandurah Magic by beating the Senators by 35 points last Friday night while the Wolves are on a seven-match winning streak since suffering a first up loss to the Tigers to start the season.

Rockingham enters the clash on top of the standings with an 8-1 record while Joondalup City comes into the weekend at 7-1.

Friday night's other match pits the Cougars up against the Senators with Cockburn looking to consolidate its position on the top eight.

However, Stirling is looking to close that gap so it looms as a crucial contest at Cockburn.

The Cougars currently sit in eighth position with a 4-6 record but they have lost four of their last five matches while the Senators are ninth with a 2-7 record having also lost four of their last games coming into the contest on Friday.

Then on Saturday night, the Wolves back up their top-of-the-table clash with the Flames on Friday night with another massive contest up against the Hawks.

Depending on what happens with the Lady Wolfpack on Friday, they could be going for top spot on Saturday night but Perry Lakes won't be any pushovers.

The Hawks enter the weekend in fifth position with a 6-3 record and they are coming off a loss last Friday night against the Willetton Tigers which came on the back of a four-game winning streak that put them in contention for a top four spot.

The Magic and Tigers then meet in another tremendous contest on Saturday night with both teams playing their only match of the weekend so they will be fresh.

Mandurah comes into the clash sitting in fourth position with an 8-2 record but the Magic's two losses have both come in their last three matches against the Cockburn Cougars and Joondalup Wolves.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are again on a three-game winning run since suffering their first loss of the season to the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and depending on what happens with the Flames against the Wolves on Friday, they have the potential to claim top position with a win in Mandurah over the Magic on Saturday night.

Also on Saturday night, the Eagles take on the Cougars at Morley with East Perth looking for its second win of the season and second on the trot since a breakthrough win over the Stirling Senators.

Their challenge on Saturday night is hosting a Cockburn team looking to consolidate its spot in the top eight but also having to back up from playing the Senators on Friday night.

The final match of the weekend then pits the Redbacks up against the Lightning at Curtin Stadium on Saturday night with Perth coming in off a four-match losing streak and a 2-7 record while Lakeside is yet to win a match from nine attempts but the Lightning have been close on several occasions.
