Eagles win again; Wolves win twice to stay on top (Week 12 Men's SBL Wrap)

THE defending champion East Perth Eagles have strung two wins together now in the men's SBL while Joondalup Wolves scored two wins in Week 12 to maintain top position just ahead of the Geraldton Buccaneers and South West Slammers.

Then in the two corresponding men's matches on Friday night, the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars beat the Mandurah Magic 131-90 at Wally Hagan Stadium and the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 118-105 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

There were four men's contests on Saturday night starting with the Lakeside Lightning beating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 129-95 at Lakeside Recreation Centre and the S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers downing the Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames 120-104 at Active West Stadium.

And the other two men's matches on Saturday night saw the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers prevail over the Perry Lakes Hawks 85-76 at Willetton Basketball Stadium and the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves beat the Perth Redbacks 120-80 at Curtin Stadium.

There were two men's matches on Sunday that saw the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves beating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 122-90 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers beating the Bethanie Stirling Senators 123-109 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

The weekend's results leave the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves (15-2) on top of the men's SBL standings narrowly ahead of the S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers (14-2) and Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers (13-3).

The Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars (10-6) have now improved to fourth position on the table with the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (10-6), Mandurah Magic (10-6), Nags Head Tavern & Bistro Rockingham Flames (8-7) and Lakeside Lightning (6-9) rounding out the top eight.

With eight matches across the three nights heading into the All-Star Game on Monday, there were a host of individual outstanding performances in the men's Week 12 action.

Starting on Friday night, captain Drew Williamson had a monster night for the Eagles with 38 points, nine steals, seven assists and four rebounds while shooting 14-of-22 from the field, 4-of-10 from beyond the arc and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Sunday Dech also contributed 20 points, nine boards, four assists and three steals for East Perth while Rhys Vague finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Andrej Donlagic 10 points and Jared Zornada 10 points.

Lien Phillip worked hard finishing with big numbers for the Eastern Suns with 29 points and 21 rebounds while shooting 13-of-22 from the floor. He also had 13 turnovers.

Kevin Anthony also had a good night for Kalamunda with 27 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, three assists and two steals with Jaarod Holmes contributing 17 points and six boards, and Geordie Murray 10 points.

Then on Saturday night, Brad Jackson had a night out for the Lightning with 30 points, six assists and three steals off the bench while hitting 10-of-15 from the field, and an outstanding 8-of-12 from three-point land.

Luke Thomas had a good night as well for Lakeside finishing with 26 points, 11 rebounds and three assists while Jordan Swing contributed 18 points, seven boards and four assists, Jesse Dixon 16 points and five assists, and Jarrad Prue 12 points and 11 boards while nailing 5-of-5 from the field.

Jay Bowie top-scored for the Giants with 24 points to go with six rebounds while Mathiang Muo contributed 17 points, seven boards and six assists, and Jacob Holmen 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

John Santia also finished with 14 points and four assists off the bench for Goldfields while hitting 4-of-5 from three-point territory.

Bennie Lewis had a big night for the Buccaneers with 34 points while Carter Cook was also outstanding with 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while hitting 3-of-5 from three-point territory.

Cory Cooperwood also contributed 21 points and six rebounds off the bench while shooting 9-of-12 from the floor, and a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe.

Aaron Ralph added 12 points and eight rebounds as well for the Buccs with Mat Wundenberg finishing with nine points, 21 rebounds and six assists.

Cooper Land did all he could for the Flames finishing with 34 points and 10 rebounds for the night while Ryan Godfrey added 22 points, Andrew Bowman 17 points, Tom Remmerswaal 13 points and Taylor Land 12 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

Kyle Armour top-scored for the Tigers with 20 points to go with six assists and five rebounds but it was the evenness in the contribution from a host of players that was most impressive for the Tigers.

Ephrem Davis also added 18 points, 10 boards and three steals while Nic Cody contributed 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, Damien Scott 17 points and five boards, and Corey Easley 11 points, six boards, four steals and four blocked shots.

Josh Garlepp led the way for the Hawks with 19 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals while Ryan Smith contributed 15 points, Ben Dixon 12 and Ben Purser 11 to go with 13 rebounds and four assists.

Captain Seb Salinas led the way for the Wolves with 25 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals while shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown, but six players ended up scoring in double-figures in the big win.

Louis Timms finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks off the bench for the Wolfpack while Damian Matacz finished with 14 points and three assists and Kevin Davis 12 points, five boards, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Rob Huntington also contributed 10 points and four rebounds for Joondalup with Brad Robbins and Ben Ironmonger scored seven points apiece as well.

Ray Turner again had a solid night for the Redbacks with 21 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 8-of-13 from the field.

Dennis Tawhiti added 13 points off the bench for Perth with Marshall Nelson finishing with 11 points and five rebounds, Ben Smith 11 points and Marshall Brown 10 points, four boards and three assists.

And finally on Sunday, Rob Huntington had a huge game for the Wolves finishing with 30 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 14-of-21 from the field.

Kevin Davis contributed 17 points and 17 rebounds as well for the Wolfpack with Trian Iliadis contributing 14 points and six assists, Seb Salinas 13 points and six assists, and Louis Timms 12 points and eight rebounds. Joel Questel also added nine points and six assists.

The Giants were without Mathiang Muo and couldn’t quite replace his production but still had some good performers led by 21 points and nine rebounds from Jay Bowie.

Jacob Holmen also finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Giants with Russell Hurst contributing 15 points and six boards, Brandon Hewitt-Holloway 12 points and five assists, and Edin Zunic 11 pints and eight rebounds.

Tre Nichols top-scored for the Slammers with 25 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals on the back of shooting 9-of-16 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Brian Voelkel had another strong all-round game with 22 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and five steals for South West with Ty Harrelson finishing with 22 points, eight boards, eight assists and three steals and Clive Weeden 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Slammers also got some good service off the bench with Jordan Hickert scoring nine points, Wade Hitchcock nine and Patrick Phillips eight.

Tom Witts top-scored for the Senators with 21 points and five rebounds with Ashley Litterick adding 17 points and nine boards, Austin Bruton 16 points, Nikolas Iliadis 10 points, Jordan Wild 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Kyle Lindbergh 10 points and 10 boards.
