Tigers, Wolves, Magic look to close gap on Flames (Week 14 Women's SBL Preview)

THE Joondalup Wolves and Rockingham Flames meet in a tantalising women's SBL match up on Saturday night while the Kalamunda Eastern Suns have two games against struggling teams to try and extend their seven-game winning run.

There are three women's matches to begin the weekend's action on Friday night with the Lakeside Lightning playing the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The Mandurah Magic also play the Schweigen East Perth Eagles at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre with the Perry Lakes Hawks taking on the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves at Bendat Basketball Centre. All three matches tip-off at 6.30pm.

There are then three women's SBL games on Saturday night with both tipping off at 6pm with the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves playing the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames at Joondalup Basketball Stadium, the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars playing the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers at Wally Hagan Stadium and the Stirling Senators facing the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Warwick Leisure Centre.

The weekend concludes on Sunday at midday with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns playing the Lakeside Lightning at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Starting on Friday night, the bottom placed Lightning host the second placed Tigers with Lakeside searching for its second win of 2015, and Willetton out to maintain pace with the league-leading Rockingham Flames.

The Tigers enter the clash at 12-3 having now won their last couple of games including a six-point victory over the Joondalup Wolves last Friday night while the Lightning are again on a four-match losing run with a 1-13 record on the season.

The Lightning and Tigers already played earlier this season in Week 4 and on that occasion it was Willetton winning 80-53 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The Magic then host the Eagles in a match featuring two teams in some good form.

Mandurah currently sits in fourth position at 11-3 on a three-game winning streak and fresh off having the bye last weekend while East Perth is having a vastly improved season under new coach Narelle Henry.

The Eagles have won three of their last five games now including a 17-point victory over the Senators last Saturday night to now sit on a 4-10 record to remain in contention for a playoff spot, which would be a great result after a disappointing last couple of seasons.

The Magic and Eagles have already played this season in Week 6 and that was a thrilling contest at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre with Mandurah prevailing 70-67 over East Perth.

The last match of Friday night leaves the Hawks with a big challenge to return to the winner's list hosting the Wolves.

Perry Lakes has now lost five straight matches but remain in sixth position at 6-7, but the Hawks do need to start winning again soon to guarantee a playoff berth.

However, Joondalup is also looking to bounce back from a rare loss this season last Friday to the Willetton Tigers and the Wolves still occupy third position in the standings with a 12-3 record.

The two teams met just over a month ago in Week 9 with the Lady Wolfpack scoring a thumping 94-51 win over Perry Lakes, but the Hawks will be looking at putting in a much more competitive showing at home this Friday night.

Then on Saturday night, the action is highlighted by the clash between the Lady Wolfpack and the defending champion Flames at Joondalup.

The Wolves will be coming off their clash with the Hawks on Friday night while the Flames enter the clash on top of the table with a 13-1 record and on a six-game winning streak.

The Wolves and Flames have already played once this season and that saw Rockingham record a 76-61 victory at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The Cougars also host the Tigers in another intriguing contest featuring two teams currently in the top eight.

Cockburn returned to the winner's list last Friday night beating the Lightning which saw the Cougars improve to a 7-9 record and remain in seventh position but the Tigers are looking to maintain touch with the league-leading Flames, and will be coming off having played the Lightning on Friday night.

Cockburn and Willetton played earlier in the season in Week 3 and it was a good contest on that Friday evening with the Tigers ending up winning 80-69 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The Senators then play the Suns with both teams coming in with polar opposite form lines.

Stirling is now in second last position with a 2-12 record having lost seven straight matches while Kalamunda is looking strong in fifth position at 8-5 and currently on a seven-game winning streak as they prepare to play each other for the first time in 2015.

And finally on Sunday, the Suns take on the Lightning with the in-form Eastern Suns backing up playing Stirling on Saturday night while Lakeside will be coming off having taken on the Tigers on Friday.

The Suns and Lightning already played once this season back in Week 8 and in that contest it was Kalamunda who recorded an 87-79 victory over the Lakeside Recreation Centre.
