Suns and Lightning split victories to close weekend (Week 14 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Lakeside Lightning split women's and men's SBL victories on Sunday afternoon to close out Week 14 action.

The women's round concluded on Sunday when the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beat the Lakeside Lightning 77-66 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

And the Week 14 men's action finished on Sunday afternoon with the Lakeside Lightning defeating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 105-93 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Starting with the women's contest on Sunday, the Eastern Suns continued their remarkable form winning a ninth consecutive match to improve to a 10-5 record and to further consolidate fifth spot in the standings, and to continue to put pressure on the teams in the top four.

The Lightning, meanwhile, have now lost six consecutive matches and despite continuing to put in some impressive performances, they remain in last position with just one win for the 2015 season to date.

The Lightning made a good start to the contest as well to lead at the end of the first period, and then put in a good defensive showing in the fourth quarter keeping the Suns to just six points, but that only was enough to see them cut Kalamunda's final winning margin to 11 points.

Abbey Duinker top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 18 points, seven rebounds and two assists on the back of shooting 9-of-17 from the field.

Melissa Moyle added 15 points, four assists and two boards as well for the Suns with Jessie Edwards contributing 14 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.

Thea Lemberger also finished with eight points and four rebounds for Kalamunda while Rebecca Motroni scored nine points and Natalia Soli'ai eight to go with six boards, four assists and three steals.

Courtney Byrnes had a big game for the Lightning with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while hitting an outstanding 4-of-6 from three-point territory.

Ashleigh Grant also finished with 16 points and six rebounds for the Lightning while also doing well nailing 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Tiahrn Flynn added eight points and three assists for Lakeside and Amie Nash seven points and 11 rebounds.

Then in the men's match on Sunday, the Lightning won their second match of the weekend backing up their victory on Friday night over the Willetton Tigers by beating the Eastern Suns by 12 points at Kalamunda.

That sees the Lightning consolidate eighth position on the standings now improving to an 8-10 record while the Eastern Suns are now on an eight-game losing streak to sit on 2-17.

After the Suns were on top at half-time leading 47-45, the Lightning went up a gear in the second half and the home side couldn’t go with them with Lakeside outscoring Kalamunda 60-46 to end up winning by 12 points.

Jarrad Prue top-scored off the bench for the Lightning and had a terrific afternoon with 22 points, 19 rebounds, five steals and two assists on the back of shooting 11-of-13 from the field.

Jordan Swing added 20 points, seven boards, seven assists and two steals for Lakeside with Jesse Dixon contributing 20 points, six rebounds and five assists, Luke Thomas 15 points, nine boards and three assists, and Brad Jackson 11 points.

Kevin Anthony did all he could for the Suns finishing with 28 points, three rebounds and two assists on the back of shooting 10-of-17 from the floor.

Lien Phillip also contributed 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Eastern Suns with Seva Chan adding 20 points, seven assists, three boards and two steals.
