Flames maintain top spot; Suns win ninth straight (Week 14 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames maintained top position in the women's SBL seeing off the challenge of the Joondalup Wolves while the Kalamunda Eastern Suns continued to show they are a force to be reckoned with scoring two more wins to now have won nine straight matches.

The three women's matches on Friday night saw the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers defeat the Lakeside Lightning 100-62 at Lakeside Recreation Centre, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves down the Perry Lakes Hawks 72-46 at Bendat Basketball Centre and the Mandurah Magic beat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 79-63 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

There were three women's matches on Saturday night with the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers beating the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars 78-65 at Wally Hagan Stadium, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns defeating the Stirling Senators 76-73 at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames downing the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves 94-78 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

The women's round concluded on Sunday when the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beat the Lakeside Lightning 77-66 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The weekend's results saw the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames (14-1) maintain top position in the women's standings ahead of the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (14-2), Mandurah Magic (12-3) and Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves (13-4).

The Kalamunda Eastern Suns (10-5) sit clear in fifth position with the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers (6-8), Perry Lakes Hawks (6-8) and Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars (7-10) rounding out the top eight after 14 rounds.

The Schweigen East Perth Eagles (4-11), Perth Redbacks (3-12), Stirling Senators (2-13) and Lakeside Lightning (1-15) are all outside of a playoff position.

There were again some outstanding individual performances in the women's action in Week 14, starting on Friday night when Kate Malpass had a massive night for Willetton ending up with 32 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals while shooting 14-of-23 from the field, and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Ebony Antonio added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds as well for the Tigers while Louella Tomlinson contributed 11 points and eight boards, Emma Gandini 10 points, Lisa Wallbutton 10 points and six rebounds, Desiree Kelley seven points, four boards and four assists, and Zoe Harper six points and 13 rebounds.

Ashleigh Grant had a good night for the Lightning finishing with 28 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots with Courtney Byrnes adding 13 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

No player for the Wolves scored more than 12 points, but with nine players all scoring at least five points they ended up coming away with the comfortable win over the Hawks.

Casey Lockwood top-scored for the Lady Wolfpack with 12 points with Chelsea Burns adding 11 points, four rebounds and two assists and Rebecca Mercer 10 points and three assists.

Ellyce Ironmonger also finished with eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals while Alex Kerr contributed eight points, Shani Amos eight points, three boards and three assists, Amy Kidner six points, Nonila Martin six points, and Nikita-Lee Martin five points, five rebounds and three steals.

Kassi Conditt finished with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Hawks with Mia Satie adding 10 points, five boards and three assists. Georgia Clarke also had five points, six rebounds and two assists, and Annika Renkema six points, five boards and two steals.

The Magic then capped off a memorable night on their home floor when they were celebrating the milestones of Shelly Boston (400 games), Gemma Thomas (250) and Rachel Halleen (200) with a 16-point victory over the Eagles.

Casey Mihovilovich led the way for the Magic with 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and five assists while Ashlee Sidebottom contributed 16 points.

Boston added 13 points and eight boards off the bench for Mandurah with Rachel Halleen finishing with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds, and Emma Klasztorny six points, three boards and three assists.

Kelsey Maffin top-scored for the Eagles with 19 points to go with four steals and three rebounds on the back of shooting 8-of-16 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point territory.

Haylee DeSousa contributed 15 points off the bench for East Perth with Denielle Lipscombe adding 12 points and Dannielle Devenny nine points to go with nine rebounds.

Then on Saturday, Louella Tomlinson had a big night for the Tigers with 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists while Kate Malpass contributed 15 points, six assists and four boards.

Desiree Kelley added 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals also for Willetton with Ebony Antonio finishing with 11 points and Lisa Wallbutton six to go with nine boards, four assists and four steals.

Playing-coach Deanna Smith did all she could for the Cougars with 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists with Katie Loberg contributing 22 points, Taryn Priestly nine and five boards, and Abbie McDonald seven to go with eight rebounds.

Abbey Duinker led the way for the Suns with 15 points and seven rebounds while shooting 7-of-11 from the field, but she had plenty of support from her teammates.

Madeleine Dennis finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench for the Eastern Suns with Melissa Moyle adding 13 points and seven boards, Jessie Edwards 12 points and 13 rebounds, Rebecca Motroni 10 points and Thea Lemberger nine points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Tegan Walker top-scored for the Senators with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals with Cassie Bates adding 19 points and Amber Land 14 to go with 11 boards, six assists and three blocked shots.

Samantha Whitcomb had an outstanding night for the Flames in one of her best performances of the 2015 season with 34 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Darcee Garbin also had a superb game for Rockingham with 24 points and 13 rebounds with Jacinta Bourne adding 15 points, nine boards, three assists and three steals, and Tarsha Fletcher 11 points and eight rebounds.

Rebecca Mercer top-scored for the Wolves with 16 points while Casey Lockwood added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists, Shani Amos 14 points, five boards and three assists, Antonia Edmondson 11 points and Nikita-Lee Martin 11 points and five rebounds.

Finally on Sunday, Abbey Duinker top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 18 points, seven rebounds and two assists on the back of shooting 9-of-17 from the field.

Melissa Moyle added 15 points, four assists and two boards as well for the Suns with Jessie Edwards contributing 14 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.

Thea Lemberger had eight points and four rebounds for Kalamunda while Rebecca Motroni scored nine points and Natalia Soli'ai eight to go with six boards, four assists and three steals.

Courtney Byrnes had a big game for the Lightning with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while hitting an outstanding 4-of-6 from three-point territory.

Ashleigh Grant finished with 16 points and six rebounds for the Lightning while also doing well nailing 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Tiahrn Flynn added eight points and three assists for Lakeside and Amie Nash seven points and 11 rebounds.
