Week 4 Women's SBL Wrap

THERE remains two unbeaten and two winless teams in the Women's SBL after Week 4 of the 2016 season that was highlighted by two wins to the Perry Lakes Hawks with Deanna Smith the star.

It was a monster night on Friday to open the action with five matches with the Perry Lakes Hawks beating the East Perth Eagles 81-66 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The Willetton Tigers also beat the Cockburn Cougars 82-55, the Joondalup Wolves defeated the Perth Redbacks 68-47, the Mandurah Magic downed the South West Slammers 90-43 and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns prevailed 74-70 over the Stirling Senators.

The night's action also saw Casey Mihovilovich lead the Magic to the big win at Eaton Recreation Centre in what was her 400th appearance for Mandurah.

Then on Saturday night the round concluded with two matches that saw the Perry Lakes Hawks beat the Stirling Senators 83-64 at Bendat Basketball Centre, and the Rockingham Flames defeat the Lakeside Lightning 77-61 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Following the Week 4 action, the Willetton Tigers and Perry Lakes Hawks are atop the standings both with 4-0 records. The Rockingham Flames (5-1) aren’t far behind having won five straight despite being without Sami Whitcomb on Saturday night.

The Perth Redbacks are fourth with a 3-1 record ahead of the Joondalup Wolves (2-1), Mandurah Magic (2-1), Kalamunda Eastern Suns (2-3), Stirling Senators (2-4), Lakeside Lightning (1-3) and Cockburn Cougars (1-4).

The East Perth Eagles and South West Slammers remain without a win both having lost their opening four games of 2016.

The Team of the Week has been named made up of Jacinta Bourne (Rockingham Flames), Stacey Barr (Kalamunda Eastern Suns), Deanna Smith (Perry Lakes Hawks), Adijat Adams (Mandurah Magic) and Louella Tomlinson (Willetton Tigers).

Smith was named Player of the Week for her two performances in the Hawks' wins over the Eagles and Senators.

She continues to enjoy the freedom of playing after doing well in the playing-coach role last season for the Cockburn Cougars.

On Friday night, Smith had 24 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists in the win over East Perth shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and a perfect 9-of-9 at the line.

Then on Saturday, she had 31 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals shooting 10-of-12 from the field, 6-of-6 from three-point range and 5-of-5 at the charity stripe.

Bourne was named to the Team of the Week for the first time as she stepped up without Whitcomb for the Flames. She had 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots in Saturday's win over the Lightning.

Barr was named to the Team of the Week for the second straight time after another 25 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists in Friday's tight win over the Senators.

Adams was named to the Team of the Week for the first time in her first season with the Magic following 26 points and 14 rebounds in the win on Friday. She shot 10-of-16 from the field and 6-of-7 at the free-throw line.

Tomlinson was named to the Team of the Week for the second time this season after 32 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots in Friday's win over the Cougars. She shot 15-of-23 from the field and knocked down two threes.

There were other standout performers too starting on Friday night starting with Emma Gandini who contributed 16 points for Willetton against Cockburn.

Candace Williams and Thornton Cherridy both had good nights for the Cougars with the former delivering 25 points and 14 rebounds, and the latter 15 points, six assists and six boards. The rest of the team added only 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The Lady Wolfpack handed the Redbacks their first loss of the season with Nikita-Lee Martin finishing with 17 points, Klara Wischer 14 (10 rebounds, five assists, three steals), Shan Amos 12 (seven boards, four assists) and Amy Kidner 10 (eight rebounds).

Rebecca Mercer was the only Redbacks player to score in double-figures with 13 points to go with six assists and three rebounds.

Adams received plenty of help in Mandurah's win over South West with Annette Davis contributing 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, and Mihovilovich 10 points, six assists and five rebounds in her 400th game for the club.

Brittany Gliddon scored 13 points for the Slammers to go with seven rebounds while Taylah Kemp added 10 points and four boards off the bench.

Sabrina Jeridore helped Barr lead the Eastern Suns to the win over the Senators with 10 points while Natalia Soli'ai contributed nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Amber Land led the way for the Senators with 20 points and seven rebounds with Lyndal Gardner adding 14 points and Tegan Walker eight to go with 10 rebounds and five assists.

Then on Saturday against the Hawks, Land had 10 points and 13 rebounds for Stirling, Chelsea Armstrong 10 points and Taylor Bestry nine to go with five rebounds and two steals.

Along with Smith's performance on Friday for Perry Lakes, Emily Burton scored 13 points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks while Antonia Edmondson had 12 points, four boards and three assists, and Sarah Donovan 10 points.

Then on Saturday, Burton had 12 points and six rebounds, Edmondson 11 points, five boards and five assists, and Lauren Jeffers nine points, eight assists and three steals.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre worked hard for the Eagles on Friday against the Hawks with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists including knocking down two threes.

Darcee Garbin had another big performance for the Flames on Saturday against the Lightning with 21 points and 14 rebounds with Tarsha Fletcher adding 10 points and six boards.

Alison Schwagmeyer finished with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for Lakeside, Ashleigh Grant 12 points and eight boards, and Devanny King 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
