Week 5 Friday night SBL wrap

THE Lakeside Lightning have opened Week 5 of the 2016 SBL season with a Women's and Men's victory over the East Perth Eagles at Lakeside Recreation Centre on Friday night.

The Friday night action saw the Women's Lightning defeat the Eagles 61-40. While in the Men's contest, Lakeside defeated East Perth 103-94.

In the Women's match, the Lightning scored their second win of the season and kept the Eagles winless now after five games.

Lakeside restricted East Perth to just 15 points in the first half and that was enough to set up the eventual 21-point victory on their home floor.

The Lightning won despite 26 turnovers but they pulled in 51 rebounds to 37 from the Eagles.

While the Lightning didn’t shoot overly well at 21-of-58 for 36 per cent from the field, the Eagles had a horror night going 16-of-76 for 21 per cent to go with 1-of-13 from three-point range and only getting to the line 14 times where they made seven.

Ashleigh Grant had a good night for the Lightning with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots while Alison Schwagmeyer added 15 points, nine boards, three assists and three steals.

Devanny King also had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeside, and Courtney Byrnes 11 points, seven boards and six assists.

Gemma Houghton top-scored for the Eagles off the bench with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.

But Nicole Jorre St Jorre was the only other East Perth player to score more than five points with eight to go with four rebounds and two steals.

And then in the Men's contest, Lakeside improved to a 3-3 record on the season by beating the now 1-5 East Perth at home.

The Lightning started strongly with 32 points to 18 in the first period and then despite an Eagles comeback during the next two quarters to trail by just two points at three quarter-time, Lakeside finished the stronger to win by nine.

The Eagles did a good job with ball in hand with just the 16 turnovers compared to 22 by the Lightning, but Lakeside won the rebounding battle by 11 and shot 43-of-91 from the field at 47 per cent to set up the eventual victory.

Daniel Alexander was the star of the night for the Lightning with 36 points and 17 rebounds on the back of shooting 16-of-24 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point territory.

TJ Hallice also had a good impact for Lakeside with 23 points and nine boards while Hayden Bell contributed 17 points, four boards and four assists, and Corey Martin 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Seva Chan did well running the point as well for the Lightning finishing with six points and 12 assists.

Drew Williamson top-scored for the Eagles with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
