MSBL Player of the Week

THE week seven Men’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Matthew Adekponya of the S&K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers.

Buccs recruit Matthew Adekponya has been one of the most in-form players across the league over the past month and this week he took his game to another level.

Facing a tough double header on the road, the Buccs focussed their attention firstly to Saturday night when they took on the Perry Lakes Hawks at the Bendat Basketball Centre.

Adekponya was a major contributor with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block in a great team win, defeating the Hawks 106 to 90.

On Sunday the Buccs made their way to Warwick Stadium to take on the highly ranked Stirling Senators when Matthew Adekponya exploded for the visitors with a monster game including 39 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and a block to lead Geraldton to a seven point win 112 to 105.

Adekponya’s speed and agility was a handful for the Senators as he consistently got himself to the foul line to shoot 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.

Thriving in the Buccs game style under coach Trahair, Adekponya is putting up excellent numbers to start his debut season in the SBL, currently seventh in the league’s leading scorers column averaging 25.9 points per game.

With quality players such as Wundenberg, Barrow, Ralph and Cook in the one line-up alongside the dynamic Adekponya, you can see why there is plenty of excitement in Geraldton around the Buccaneers championship chances this season.
