Week 10 Men's SBL Wrap

THE Kalamunda Eastern Suns broke their duck in an overtime thriller, East Perth won again with Tom Jervis in the line-up while the Joondalup Wolves and Cockburn Cougars won emphatically, and the Geraldton Buccaneers split a tough road double as part of Week 10 in the Men's SBL.

There were four Men's SBL matches on Friday night with the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves defeating the Bethanie Stirling Senators 109-91 at HBF Arena.

The Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars also beat the Mandurah Magic 115-77 while the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beat the Lakeside Lightning in overtime and the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames prevailed 96-89 over the Print Sync South West Slammers.

There were another four matches on Saturday night with the Textile WA Perth Redbacks beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 117-95, the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers downing the Mandurah Magic 88-76, the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles defeating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 92-90 and the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames winning 106-95 over the S&K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers.

The Buccs were then able to bounce back on Sunday with a 110-105 victory over the Textile WA Perth Redbacks at Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre.

Following Week 10 of the 2016 Men's SBL season, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves (9-2) remain on top of the standings ahead of the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars (10-3) and S&K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers (10-4).

The Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (9-4) sit in fourth position with the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames (9-6), Bethanie Stirling Senators (9-6), Perry Lakes Hawks (7-7) and Textile WA Perth Redbacks (6-7) rounding out the top eight.

The Silver Lakes Resources Goldfields Giants (6-8) have now fallen to ninth position ahead of the Lakeside Lightning (4-8), Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles (4-8), Print Sync South West Slammers (4-8), Mandurah Magic (4-10) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (1-11).

The Players of the Week are made up of Matthew Adekponya from the Geraldton Buccaneers, Damien Scott of the Willetton Tigers, Cooper Land from the Rockingham Flames and Daniel Alexander of the Lakeside Lighting.

The Kalamunda Eastern Suns' first win of 2016 was then rewarded with Jarrad Prior named to the Team of the Week.

The Eastern Suns and Lightning played out an overtime thriller at Lakeside Recreation Centre on Friday with the visitors prevailing for their first win of 2016 to end a 26-game overall losing run.

Prior was named to the Team of the Week as a result for his 31 points, three steals, three rebounds and three assists while shooting 7-of-17 from three-point territory.

Alexander had another strong showing for the Lightning named to the Team of the Week for a fifth time after 32 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks on shooting 13-of-23 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Adekponya was named to the Team of the Week for a fourth time in 2016 following 30 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and two steals in Saturday's loss to the Flames.

Then on Sunday in the win over the Redbacks, Adekponya had 27 points and 10 rebounds shooting 9-of-14 from the floor including all three of his three-point attempts.

Scott was named to the Team of the Week for the second time in 2016 after 34 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals in Saturday's 12-pont win at home over the Magic. He shot 13-of-27 from the floor including hit five three-pointers.

Cooper Land was named to the Team of the Week for a third time this season after leading the Flames to a seven-point win on the road to the Slammers on Friday with 29 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

He backed up against the Buccs on Saturday with 27 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.

They weren’t the only standout players of the weekend though. On Friday night, the Wolves and Senators did battle at HBF Arena with the defending champions coming away with an 18-point victory.

Trian Iliadis starred for the Wolves with 29 points, five rebounds and five assists shooting 12-of-22 from the field and nailing five triples.

Kevin Davis also contributed 20 points, nine rebounds and three steals for the Wolfpack with Rob Huntington adding 14 points, five boards and three assists, Seb Salinas 15 points, three boards, three assists and two steals, and Reece Maxwell 11 points. Greg Hire had nine points and 18 rebounds.

Cody Ellis top-scored for the Senators with 21 points while AJ Majstrovich finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Kyle Lindbergh 15 points, four boards, three assists and three steals.

The Cougars beat the Magic at home by 38 points on Friday with Marcus Goode leading the way with 26 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Gavin Field added 25 points, six boards, two assists and two blocks for Cockburn, Najee Lane 16 points, 15 boards and seven assists, Sheldon McIntyre 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Julian Pesava 11 points.

Trevor Setty delivered 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Magic with Ben Smith contributing 20 points and eight boards.

Chad Simpson contributed 14 points and five rebounds for Mandurah and Taylor Mullenax 10 points and 10 boards.

Then on Saturday against Willetton, Ben Smith had another big night for the Magic with 25 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks. Tom Remmerswaal added 17 points and four boards and Setty 15 points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

As well as Prior's performance for the Suns in the overtime win over the Lightning on Friday, Kerrod Horn delivered 20 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Brandon McGill also finished with 18 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and six steals, Tim Squire 17 points, four boards, three assists and three steals, and Travis McIlroy 10 points.

On top of Alexander's showing for the Lightning, TJ Hallice contributed 27 points, 18 rebounds and 12 assists. His wasn’t the only triple-double for Lakeside either with Corey Martin delivering 10 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

Matthew Vinci also had 17 points for the Lightning, Tom Parkinson 12 and Daniel Grida 10.

On top of Cooper Land's performance on Friday for the Flames, Ryan Godfrey finished with 18 points and five rebounds, Chudier Pal 17 points and 25 boards, and Taylor Land 11 points, nine boards and three assists.

Then in Saturday's win for the Flames over the Buccs, Godfrey finished with 27 points and six assists, Taylor Land 16 points and eight assists, and Matthew Honey 10 points and six boards.

The Slammers went down at home to the Flames on Friday despite another 28 points, five assists and four steals from Tre Nichols. Royal Crouch contributed 21 points, 15 rebounds and four assists, Teny Puot 10 points, four boards and two assists, and Clive Weeden 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Redbacks continued their winning form on Saturday beating the Hawks by 22 points with Lewis Thomas leading the way with 27 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots shooting 11-of-20 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point land.

Ben Smith added 20 points for Perth, Michael Vigor 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots, Jourdan DeMuynck 14 points, five boards, four assists and two steals, Joel Wagner 14 points, six assists and five rebounds, and Reed McConnell 11 points.

In Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers, DeMuynck had a huge performance for the Redbacks with 37 points, nine rebounds and three assists shooting 14-of-26 from the floor.

Smith contributed 26 points and five rebounds for Perth, Thomas 14 points and eight boards, Wagner 12 points, eight assists and five steals, and Vigor nine points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

The Hawks lost to the Redbacks at home on Saturday with Brian Carlwell producing 16 points and nine rebounds. Ben Dixon added 14 points, four assists and three rebounds, Ben Purser 13 points, six boards and three assists, Jackson Simkovic 13 points and Matthew Sellers 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Not only did Scott impress for the Tigers on Saturday, but Kyle Armour delivered 16 points and six assists for Willetton, Jay Bowie 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, Nic Cody 11 points, seven boards and three blocked shots, and Charles Funches 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Eagles continued their winning form with Tom Jervis in the line-up beating the Giants by two points in Kalgoorlie on Saturday night.

Jervis came off the bench for 21 points, 12 rebounds and two assists for East Perth with Rhys Vague adding 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, Drew Williamson 17 points, three boards, two assists and two steals, and Nikola Donlagic 12 points and five rebounds.

It was a fourth straight loss for the Giants despite 20 points from Daniel Goodluck. Kenny Manigault added 19 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds and six steals for another triple-double while Edin Zunic contributed 14 points and nine boards, and Jacob Holmen 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Buccs lost on the road to the Flames on Saturday despite the efforts of Adekponya. Maurice Barrow also had 17 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists, and Aaron Ralph 12 points and nine boards.

Then in Sunday's win over the Redbacks, Barrow delivered 32 points and 10 rebounds for the Buccs shooting 14-of-19 from the floor.

Carter Cook also contributed 23 points and six assists for Geraldton, Beau Samuelson 16 points and Ralph 10 to go with four rebounds and three blocks.
