Week 16 Sunday SBL wrap

THE Perry Lakes Hawks and Joondalup Wolves both made it a winning Sunday to close Week 16 in the SBL with their Women's and Men's teams beating the South West Slammers and East Perth Eagles respectively.

They were two especially important victories for the Perry Lakes Hawks over the Print Sync South West Slammers at Bendat Basketball Centre.

The Hawks lost both matches to the Stirling Senators on Friday but bounced back well on Sunday with the Women's team winning 91-54 and then Men's prevailing 111-89 over the travelling Slammers.

And at Joondalup Basketball Stadium, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves won both clashes over the East Perth Eagles. The Women won 94-58 and then the Men scored an 89-69 victory.

At Bendat Basketball Centre, the Lady Hawks were looking to bounce back following a disappointing loss to the Senators on Friday at Warwick Stadium to ensure they remained clear in fourth position.

And the Hawks were able to beat the Slammers by 37 points in the finish with the class of Deanna Smith and Antonia Edmondson too much for a youthful Slammers who did keep fighting hard.

South West did well in the first half to keep in touch but Perry Lakes pulled away in the second half with 46 points to 21. The Slammers were also made to pay for 28 turnovers with the Hawks scoring 25 points from those along with 50 points in the paint to 24.

Edmondson top-scored for the Hawks with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals with Smith adding 19 points, five boards, four assists and two steals.

Kate Anthony contributed 17 points and Sarah Donovan eight to go with 15 rebounds.

The Men's clash then saw the Hawks desperate to end a five-game losing run and to return to the top eight having been replaced with East Perth's win over Stirling on Saturday night.

The Hawks exploded out of the blocks against a Slammers team still an outside playoff chance if they were able to win. South West was missing Royal Crouch but so was Perry Lakes missing Jordan Hickert who had a strong performance on Friday in the loss before getting hurt.

Perry Lakes flew to a 23-5 start to rock the Slammers but the Hawks went cold either side of half-time and the visitors got on a roll including Corey Easley nailing a three on the buzzer.

They got within a point early in the third quarter but the Hawks managed to steady the ship and then dominate the final 18 minutes of the game to end up running out convincing 22-point winners.

It was a crucial win for the Hawks as well to stop the losing slide at five and improve them to a 9-13 record while the Slammers slip to 6-14.

Brian Carlwell top-scored for the Hawks with 22 points and nine rebounds on the back of shooting 10-of-13 from the field.

Captain Ben Purser had a strong afternoon with 21 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists while Ben Dixon contributed 16 points and six boards, Bryton Hobbs 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals, Ryan Smith 10 points, five boards and three blocks, and Josh Garlepp 10 points.

Tre Nichols tried to lift the Slammers across the line finishing with 28 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Corey Easley put up 15 points, six rebounds and four assists while Trent Worthington had a big game with 12 points and 20 rebounds as Clive Weeden battled foul trouble all game.

Wade Hitchcock finished with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals with Teny Puot providing nine points and seven assists as the point guard.

Then at Joondalup Basketball Stadium, the Lady Wolfpack maintained top spot on the table with a second win of the weekend with the 36-point victory.

The Eagles had scored their second win of the season on Saturday night beating the Senators, but the Wolves proved a whole other challenge and they improved to a 15-2 record with the victory.

The Lady Wolfpack quickly put a gap between them and the Eagles with 32 points to 11 in the first quarter and that effectively ended the match as a contest as they went on to win by 36 points.

Joondalup had a terrific shooting afternoon going 36-of-67 from the field at 53 per cent and 6-of-15 at 40 per cent from three. East Perth went just 20-of-74 from the floor and 5-of-23 at 21 per cent from downtown.

Klara Wischer finished with 20 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals for the Wolves with Amy Kidner adding 20 points and six boards.

Nikita-Lee Martin delivered another 18 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Lady Wolfpack, and Ellyce Ironmonger 17 points, 10 boards, four assists and three blocked shots.

Gemma Houghton put in 16 points for the Eagles off the bench while Melissa Winfield contributed 16 points and Haylee DeSousa nine.

Then in the Men's clash, the Wolves were coming off a 68-point hammering of the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Saturday and with Doug Gates again at the helm with the absence of Ben Ettridge and Luke Brennan, they scored a third straight win.

The Eagles needed to win to remain in eighth position but they managed just 69 points and the Wolves went on to win by 20 to improve to a 17-4 record with East Perth slipping to 9-13.
