Stephen Weigh and Ben Thompson to join Australian Central Eagles

Australian Central Eagles is pleased to announce the signing of NBL Rookie of the Year Nominee Stephen Weigh and former NBL player, Ben Thompson.
 
These two signings bring together former team mates from the 2008 Queensland and Australian Club Championship winning team Northampton Rockets. In the championship final in August 2008 Ben was leading scorer with 27 points and Stephen contributed 18 points for a memorable victory.
 
“Ben Thompson brings a vast wealth of NBL and State Basketball experience to a young side and will compliment the athleticism of Stephen Weigh and the young players at the Australian Central Eagles.” Adam Caporn, Australian Central Eagles Coach said.
 
“We are very excited about securing Stephen Weigh, a tall guard who has great athleticism and perimeter shooting” said Adam Caporn “and we look forward to Stephen teaming up with the experience of Ben Thompson at the Australian Central Eagles.”
 
Nick Marvin, Perth Wildcats Chief Executive Officer had this to say about Stephen joining the Australian Central Eagles “Perth Wildcats are pleased to have Stephen Weigh playing under Adam Caporn as we believe it will be great for Stephen’s basketball development to learn from an experienced guard who has a great basketball mind, knows the pace of the game to play and where guys are supposed to be. It will be a great learning experience for Stephen."
 
Stephen Weigh:
Stephen is a 198cm Guard/Forward who joins the Australian Central Eagles after his first season in the National Basketball League (NBL) with the Perth Wildcats. He is a nominee for the 2009 Rookie of the Year award. Prior to joining the Perth Wildcats he was part of the Rockhampton Rockets’ 2008 Queensland Championship on the way to winning the 2008 Australian Club Championship.
 
Stephen is the 2005 winner of the R.E. Staunton Medal as the Most Valuable Player of the Australian under 20 National Championships where he led Queensland to the National Title. Like Head Coach Adam Caporn, he has played in the College System in the United States of America (University of Utah) and held a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport.
 
Ben Thompson:
Ben is a veteran 194cm Guard/Forward who joins the Australian Central Eagles after winning three Queensland Basketball League (QBL) Championships and an Australian Club Championship. In the 2008 QBL Championship Final, Ben hit a game high 30 points, gathered eight rebounds and gave out three assists on his way to the Most Valuable Player in the Final.
 
Ben played 267 NBL games over 10 seasons including the 2003 NBL Grand Final for the Perth Wildcats. He was second in 2002 NBL Most Improved Player awards and finished third in the 1997 NBL Rookie of the Year award. Like Stephen and Adam he also held a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport.
 
Australian Central Eagles also has another Championship connection with Assistant Coach, Damien Chalk playing in the 2005 and 2006 Queensland Championship Team, Southern District Spartans with Ben Thompson which reinforces the championship experience that has been added to the 2009 Australian Central Eagles.
