Hawks too Strong for Tigers

The Women started off the night and by the half way point of the first quarter the Hawks had taken a 9-5 lead thanks to six points from Lynx player Chelsea Boyanich. By quarter time the Hawks had stretched their lead to six points (21-15).

Clare Thomson-Boston and Renee Wharekura combined for 10 of the Hawks 16 points in the second quarter. The Tigers fought hard to reduce the margin with Danni Priestly hitting six points for the quarter, however there was not enough fire power to keep up with the hawks and they went into the half up 37-28.

The second half saw the Hawks outscore the Tigers 39 to 22 on the back of 20 points from former Lady Buccaneer Tegan Walker, Chelsea Boyanich & Lyndal Gardiner. For the Tigers Lynx pair Ashley Gilmore and Kate Malpass had 11 and 12 points respectively but with both players getting into foul trouble the Tigers lost their offensive fire power connecting on just 26% of their shots for the game. The game was called off with 25 seconds to go after Tigers youngster Alana Hampell had a nasty fall, hitting her head, requiring ambulance attention.

The Men's game saw last years Grand Finalists take to the court without import Robert Epps who did not get his immigration clearance through in time. The Hawks had a full strength line-up led by Wildcat Tom Garlepp.

Wayne Biddle (Tigers) & Ben Purser (Hawks) provided the early scoring punch for their teams with six points each, however it was the Tigers who went into the first break with a 33-28 lead on the back of 10 points from Kosta Illic.

Wayne Biddle continued his fine shooting display with eight points for the quarter but the Hawks fought back hard on the back of 20 points from Wildcat Tom Garlepp and local Martin Vahala. Heading into the main break the scores were deadlocked at 56-56.

The third quarter was all one way traffic with the Hawks outscoring the Tigers 42-23 led by Garlepp who had 10 for the quarter and Sam Keene who had 8. At the last change the Hawks were up by 19 points (98-79).

The fourth quarter was a lot closer with the bench players getting a run for both teams, the Tigers won the quarter 24-22. The damage had already been done in the third however and the Hawks ran out 17 point winners 120-103.
