Eagles douse Flames

EAST Perth finished strongly to record a 105-94 win over Rockingham in the mens State Basketball League on Saturday night.

After forging a solid 11-point lead by half-time, the Morley-based club faded as Rockingham made the most of their scoring chances.

The Flames closed the gap to just five points at the final break but the Eagles recovered their composure in the last quarter.

It was more memorable given the Eagles were without coach Adam Caporn and recruit Stephen Weigh, who had Perth Wildcats commitments.

With assistant coach Damien Chalk in charge, captain Andrew McLennan came into the starting five, while guard Jon Moon was introduced earlier.

On Friday night, a second-quarter burst by Perry Lakes saw the Hawks inflict a 96-86 loss on the Eagles, their second of the SBL season.

After a tight first period, Perry Lakes blew the game open with a 25-16 run in the second quarter and the Eagles did not recover.

It was a scrappy match with 65 fouls called between the two sides, while both teams shot at a disappointing 38.5 per cent.

Despite the loss, Weigh was outstanding from the perimeter, hitting six of the team's seven three-pointers as he clocked up a season-high 42 points.

For the Hawks, Tom Garlepp scored 27 points with support from Jo-Alan Tupaea (24 points).

In the women's league, East Perth are still without a win after losses to Perry Lakes and Rockingham at the weekend.

The undefeated Hawks were too good for the Eagles, winning 64-53 despite the absence of Australian representative Deanna Smith.

A 22-8 first period set up Rockingham's 84-63 win at the Mike Barnett complex on Saturday.
