Thursday & Friday Review

Wanneroo kicked off round 5 of SBL action at Joondalup basketball stadium on Thursday night with their game against the Wanneroo Wolves. The Women's match saw the Joondalup City Wolves stop their two game losing streak with a ten point win over the Lightning. The Lightning controlled the match early, taking a six point lead at half time. However the Wolves dominated the third term with a 25-13 period that put them in control for the match. Jodie Wallace was the stand out for the Flames with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Meghan D'arcy & Danielle Lipscombe had 12 & 10 points respectively. Natalie Young again stood out for the Lightning with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Laurianne Higgins was the only other player in double figures for the Lightning with 10 points & 12 rebounds.

The Lightning Men dominated the Titan Interactive Wolves in their game, setting up a win on the back of a 46-29 first half. The Lightning then stepped up a gear and put on a clinic for the Wolves with a 30-7 third quarter, giving them a 44 point three quarter time lead. The Lightning took out the match 103-62. Brad Jackson top scored with 24 points for the Lightning while US import Luke Payne supported him with 16. Locals Jarrad Prue (15 points & 16 rebounds) & Ryan Sofoulis (15 points, 6 rebounds & 5 assists) also played well. For the Wolves Doug Gates had 16 points and Damian Matacz finished with 12. The team struggled from all over the floor with 28.9% from the field, 29.4% outside & 53.3% at the line.

Friday saw the Kalgoorlie & Geraldton team's travel to town for their Easter Double Header weekend. First up was the Giants & Flames who did battle at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex. The Flames put up a good showing for the first half and they had a six point half time lead. However the reigning champion Giants proved too strong in the second with a 5 point lead at three quarter time and a 37-12 last quarter, running out 114-84 winners. Import Michael Haney registered 25 points & 10 rebounds for the Giants while Shamus Ballantyne put 24 points on the board and dished out 12 assists. Kalgoorlie local Ryan Hulme also finished with 24 points. Joseph Harrel again led the Flames with 27 points & 10 rebounds while young star Ryan Godfrey chipped in with 17.

The other match saw the undefeated Dominos Geraldton Buccaneers take on the Perry Lakes Hawks at the home of basketball. This was a see-sawing affair with the Hawks taking a 5 point quarter time lead and two point half time lead. At the last change it was again the Hawks by two. The Buccs got as close as 1 point with 27 seconds to go, however the Hawks steadied to win by four 98-94, ending the Buccs undefeated run. Luke Meyer scored less than 30 points for the first time this season, finishing with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists. Fellow US import Michael Le Blanc top scored with 39 points and 8 rebounds The Buccs out-rebounded the Hawks and shot better from the floor however with a shortage of players they hit just 7-24 from outside and 11-22 from the charity stripe. Jesse Dixon top scored for the Hawks with 24 points including 5-5 from outside. Tom Garlepp was strong with his 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Ben Purser also chipped in for the victors with 16 points.

Tonight see's more SBL action with the Women returning to the floor. The match of the round is at Willetton with the Tigers taking on the Redbacks. In the Men's competition the Buccs travel up the hill to try and find their winning ways against the improving Suns. At the same time the new and improved Eagles will be looking to claim a big scalp against the Giants.
