Magic bounce back for win

AFTER a slow start to the State Basketball League season the Mandurah Magic women took a further step towards turning its season around after a 12-point win at home on Saturday night.

The 60-48 win over the Perth Redbacks is the Magic’s third for the season from six games and it is the first time the side has strung together two wins in a row.

After a rocky start, where the Magic trailed the visitors by seven points, the home side fought back in the second period to reduce the deficit to three by half time.

In the third term the Magic women outscored the Redbacks 14-9 to take a two-point lead into the final period and then scored 23-13 in the final quarter.

Katie Reed top scored for the Magic with 13 points and also had five assists, Kelli Hayward shot 12 points and made three steals and Gemma Thomas chipped in with a handy 10 points and four steals.

For the Redbacks Brooke Hiddlestone (17 points) and Narelle Henry (15 points) was their teams’ best but lacked support.

The Magic women, who are in eighth position with three wins and three losses, will look to continue their season comeback this weekend when they take on Willetton and Wanneroo in a double header.

The two-game weekend will kick off tomorrow night at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre when the Magic host the Tigers.

The Tigers are currently in second position and have lost only one game from eight starts.

The Magic will then play the seventh-placed Wolves at Joondalup Basketball Stadium on Saturday night.

Although the Magic men had a bright start to their game against the Redbacks last Saturday night, it all fell apart in the second half.

The Magic men led by three points at the first change and then went into half time trailing by just one point.

The Redbacks then stamped their authority on the game and outscored the Magic 26-18 in the third period and 25-16 in the final quarter to post an 18-point win.

The 86-104 loss continues a woeful start to the season for the Magic, who remain as the only team in the SBL to have yet won a game.

The Magic is 0-7 at the bottom of the SBL ladder.

Tom Remmerswaal top scored for the Magic with 22 points and Shaun Bennison added 21 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds.

This Magic men will play the 10th placed Willetton Tigers and the Wanneroo Wolves who is in seventh position.
