LDAG State Basketball League Challenge to be played in Albany

City of Albany will see State Basketball League action for the first time since Albany Raiders disbanded in 1999.

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks will play the Mandurah Magic in SPECIAL qualifying round Redbacks' home games at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre, Barker Road Albany on Saturday 6 June.  The women's game will be at 6:00PM and a men's game at 8:00PM.

From 9.30 AM on the Sunday 7 June there will be a three-hour junior basketball clinic for 8 to 17-year olds conducted by Redbacks' State Basketball League coaches and players at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre. Registration forms are available at the centre or the Albany City Council offices and participants should arrive an hour before the start to register.

The Saturday night games will provide an opportunity to see the Redbacks' current Australian Opals team-member and Women's USA National Basketball Association draftee Renae Camino, along with former Women's National Basketball League players Brooke Hiddlestone and Narelle Henry in action.  Key players for the Magic include former English National representative and Commonwealth bronze medallist Shelley Boston and tough points-scoring forward Tarsha Fletcher.

The Redbacks' men's team includes the high-scoring USA import and former college player Chris Lynch and former league most valuable player Ryan Neill.  Mandurah's team includes former National Basketball League player Aaron Trahair and former State representative and current team captain Ben Caporn.

The game will be titled the 'Local Drug Action Groups State Basketball League Challenge' in recognition of the work those voluntary groups do in their local communities, including the group in Albany, in taking action to reduce and prevent alcohol and other drug related harm.  The Redbacks is also a Local Drug Action Groups member within the basketball community.
