Redbacks lose in tight Geraldton Encounter

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League team lost in a tight match to the Geraldton Buccaneers in Geraldton 100 to 90 points.  In a game of changing fortunes the Redbacks were ahead at half time 47 to 44 as a result of strong defensive pressure and aggressiveness at the ball. 

However the game was decided in the 2nd half in which the Geraldton hit 9 three-point shots from 14 attempts, a field goal percentage of 65.

Forward/Centre Michael Vigor was the Redbacks’ top scorer with 26-points at a field goal percentage of 55 along with 3 blocks, 3 assists and 9 rebounds.  US import Chris Lynch was the Redbacks next highest scorer with 23 points along with 5 rebounds and guard Ryan Neill scored 15-points along with 4 assists and 6 rebounds.

Forward Michael Le Blanc top-scored for Geraldton with 29 points along with 11 rebounds.  Forward Tom Witts was their next highest scorer with 20 points at a field goal percentage of 60 and point-guard Danny Thomas scored 18-points along with 10 assists and 3 steals.

The loss sees the Redbacks drop one place to 9th in the 14-team competition with a season record of 6 wins and 10 losses.  Geraldton are in 2nd place with 14 wins and 2 losses.

The Redbacks play the Rockingham Flames this Saturday 30 May at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex, Dixon Road Rockingham, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.

The Redbacks men then play the Skilled Goldfields Giants at mid-day on Monday 1 June at the Belmont Oasis Stadium, corner of Alexander Road and Robinson Avenue Belmont.
