Eagles push Giants

EAST Perth pushed Goldfields all the way before finally going down 107-99 in the men’s State Basketball League match in Kalgoorlie last weekend.

The Morley-based club produced a stunning fightback against the reigning premiers, outscoring the home side 27-14 in the fourth quarter.

With 20 seconds remaining, Jarrod Balcombe scored two points to tie the scores before Eagles captain Andrew McLennan made a steal in the next play.

But Stephen Weigh could not convert his two-point attempt, leaving scores tied 88-88 and the game went into a five-minute overtime period.

The lead changed several times in overtime and the Eagles matched them until the final 80 seconds, when the Giants finally broke the game open.

Ben Thompson had 11 rebounds and 28 points, with 24 points from beyond the three-point line, including four three-pointers.

Other contributors included Weigh, with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Jarrod Balcombe with 11 points. For the Giants, Matthew Leske and Mark Heron both scored 20 points.
