Senators Women Fight to final seconds

THE Senators fought right till the siren in the women’s SBL game on Saturday night against the East Perth Eagles at The Morley Recreation Centre, only to fall by six points 72-66.

With the Stirling girls ready for a win, they welcomed Elizabeth Cooke out of retirement to play back with the team.

Liz retired at the end of last season after playing for the Perth Links earlier in her career before playing with the Stirling Senators.

“She played a great first game back, above and beyond my expectations.”  Coach Emily Gunkelman said after the game.

The first quarter saw great ball movement by the Senators and strong defence in the key which left them down by only one at quarter time 20-19.

Keeping the score close to each other, Alicia Rinaldi and Sandra Gibbs came out in the third term with great offensive rebounds to bring the game back with a clear lead of eight points at the break.

With three minutes to go in the final term it was a two point ball game to the Senators. Unfortunatly in the gruelling last seconds the Eagles took the lead and finished the game with two shots from the line.

“The girls really came out strong and played all four quarters and we were there every minute of the game,” Emily said. “When we had the lead in the remaining minutes I think we pulled back and stopped attacking and allowed them back in it. They played us well and adjusted to us. We will keep fighting.”
