Flames Shine Against Redbacks

Both the Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks women’s and men’s teams had disappointing losses to the Rockingham Flames 68 to 56 and 134 to 114 respectively.

The Redbacks’ women appeared to struggle in the absence of forward Renae Camino and were unable to break the double and sometimes triple-teaming of fellow forward Brooke Hiddlestone.  However despite this tough attention Hiddlestone top-scored for the Redbacks’ women with 19 points at a field-goal-percentage of 57 along with 15 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists and 3 blocked-shots.  Guards Jacinta Bourne and Kerise Delcoure were the next highest scorers for the Redbacks with 10 points each.  The highest scorer for the Flames was Kaye Tucker with 20 points along with 10 rebounds, with Casey Haggar being their next highest scorer on15 points and 9 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ women’s team now has 8 wins and 6 losses and is in 6th place in the 12-team competition.

In what became very much a shoot-fest in the men’s game, the top-scorer for the Redbacks was US import Chris Lynch with 33 points along with 21 rebounds and 3 assists.  Guard Jarrad Prior was the next highest scorer with 23 points at a field goal percentage of 50 along with 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.  Point guard Joel Wagner again put in a strong performance with 18 points along with 12 assists.

However, despite these solid efforts the Redbacks were irreparably damaged by Flames import David Clarkson who scored 36 points along with 8 rebounds and 8 assists, Rhett Della with 26 points and 9 rebounds and Joseph Harrell with 17 points and 5 rebounds.

The loss was damaging for the Redbacks’ men as they now slip down to 10th position in the 14-team competition with a season record of 6 wins and 11 losses.

However, the competition is so tight that a win for the Redbacks in their next game against the Skilled Goldfields Giants would see them back into the 8th and final play-off spot in the 14-team competition.  That game is at the Belmont Oasis Stadium at midday on Monday 1 June.
