Redbacks men strike against ladder leaders

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks had two strong wins in their away games against the Lakeside Lightning in the State Basketball League on Saturday night. 

In a game that saw 15 lead changes, the Redbacks’ men’s team had their finest win of the year inflicting only the second defeat for league-leaders Lighting 107 to 98 points.  Guard Jarrad Prior scored 28-points for the Redbacks at a shooting percentage of 67, which included a long bomb from well beyond the ½ court with one second to go in the first quarter.  Forward Chris Lynch also scored 28 points at 57% and brought down 13 rebounds along with 4 assists and 1 steal, while guard Ryan Neil scored 17 points along with 4 rebounds. 

Guard Luke Payne top-scored for the Lightning with a strong 38 points at 48% along with 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist while hard-working forward Jason Faulknor scored 14 points and brought down 14 rebounds.

The win sees the Redbacks move from 9th to 7th place in the 14-team competition with a season record of 8 wins and 12 losses.

The Redbacks women’s team beat the Lightning 81 to 57 points.  Opals squad-member Renae Camino top-scored for the Redbacks with 25 points along with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.  Forward Brooke Hiddlestone scored 23 points and took a massive 23 rebounds while guard Yasmin Lewis scored 10 points.  The top-scorer for the Lightning was US import Natalie Young with 23 points at a field goal percentage of 63 as well as taking 6 rebounds, making 4 assists and 1 blocked shot.

The win sees the Redbacks’ women’s team with 10 wins and 6 losses and in 5th place in the 12-team competition.

The action continues this Friday night at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre where the Redbacks take on the Cockburn Cougars in the NAIDOC Celebration fixture, with the women’s game at 6.30PM and the men’s game at 8.30PM.  Come down to watch the moving Traditional Indigenous Welcome that will be given by indigenous State Basketball League players as part of those celebrations as well as watching what will be two vital games of basketball for all teams concerned in the race to the finals.

The Redbacks then travel to the Eaton Recreation Centre to play the Bunbury Slammers on the Saturday night with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM
