In the pink for luck

RENOWNED for wearing pink socks on court for luck, basketball star Carly Wilson has made the switch to sporting pink underwear each time she competes with her new team, the East Perth Eagles.

After her first game with the Eagles in June, which the team won, she realised she had been wearing pink underwear during the game.

Superstitious by nature, the outgoing 26-year-old vows to wear a similar pair every game in the hope they prompt further victories.

Wilson, who formerly played for the Stirling Senators, joined the Morley team after returning from nine months in France where she played for Challes-les-Eaux.

“Everyone talks about playing in Europe; the leagues are much stronger there and the money is much better. It was good, but I missed my home and my family and it’s great to be back.”

She said a big part of signing with the Eagles was to be close to her partner of nine years, Adam Caporn. A former Perth Wildcat, Caporn is now the men’s head coach for the Eagles.

“He didn’t come to France with me so we haven’t spent much time together,” Wilson said.

“Being at the same club makes that a lot easier.”

As well as being close to Caporn, Wilson was inspired to join the club after seeing the team’s eagerness to win games.

“I’d heard the Eagles hadn’t been performing too well in recent years but this season, they were showing real excitement and enthusiasm for getting back on track,” Wilson said.

“I like their commitment and attitude – they really want to win.”

Wilson was 16 when she moved from her home in Victoria to the AIS in Canberra.

She met Caporn at the institute and at 20, she joined the Australian Opals squad.

The talented pair moved to Perth three years ago when Caporn was signed to the Wildcats.

Wilson has loved the game since she began shooting hoops in her back yard at the age of six.
