Ryan Godfrey Off to West Georgia University

What promises to be a very busy recruiting season is off to a very good start for the West Georgia Wolves men’s basketball program. And the first piece of Cooney’s recruiting puzzle comes to Carrollton with a distinctive, Australian accent.

Coach Michael Cooney Tuesday announced the signing of Ryan Godfrey to a letter of intent to attend West Georgia. Godfrey is a 6-1, 187-pound point guard, comes to West Georgia from Rockingham, Western Australia.

“We’re really excited to add Ryan to our program,” said Cooney. “He is very strong and aggressive, a good ball handler, and he can shoot the ball. Ryan is extremely, tough and capable. We are excited about having him the next four years.”

Though just a freshman, Godfrey doesn’t lack for experience. He represented Western Australia each of the last five years in the Australian Junior Championships. He averaged 14 points, five rebounds and five assists per game while representing his region of the country. Godfrey was also captain of the 2009 team, and has earned two silver medals and one bronze medal.

Last summer, Godfrey played for the 19-and under Western Australia Emus in the prestigious William Jones Tournament in Taiwan. Also, he was part of an Australian Institute of Sport touring team that played in Italy.

Godfrey will enroll at West Georgia at the beginning of fall semester classes in August.
