Renae Camino Injured in loss to Eagles

Australian Opals squad member Renae Camino sustained what may be a serious knee injury and was unable to play for the Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks throughout most of the second half in the State Basketball League match against the East Perth Eagles on Saturday night.  The full extent of her injury will not be known until further medical tests are conducted.

The Redbacks lost in the tough, physical encounter 69 to 76 points.  Redbacks’ forward Brooke Hiddlestone was the game-high scorer with 31 points along with 15 rebounds.  Camino was their second highest scorer with 21 points along with 3 rebounds.  Centre Faye Muller top-scored for the Eagles with 24 points along with 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocked shots.  Perth Lynx player and Opals Squad member Carly Wilson also scored 24 points along with 7 rebounds and 2 steals.

The loss sees the Redbacks slip one place down the ladder to 4th in the 12-team competition with 13 wins and 7 losses.

The Redbacks’ men’s team had a strong win over the Eagles 104 to 85.  US import Chris Lynch was their top-scorer with a game-high 36 points along with 13 rebounds and 4 assists, with Centre Michael Vigor their next highest scorer on 18 points.  Point guard Joel Wagner made 11 assists and 2 steals whilst scoring 12 points and shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 13 points along with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Forward and Perth Wildcats player Steven Weigh top-scored for the Eagles with 19 points along with 4 rebounds, with 18-year old forward Jarrod Balcome being their next highest scorer on 17 points along with 4 rebounds.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men move up one place in the 14-team competition into the 8th place, which is the last of the finals play-off spots, with a season record of 10 wins and 14 losses.

With only two rounds to go in the qualifying rounds the remaining games are vital for the Redbacks to position themselves into the finals.  Their next round is against the tough Perry Lakes Hawks combinations this Saturday at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
