Lady Eagles fly high once, twice

IT was a big weekend for the East Perth Lady Eagles with two impressive wins against highly placed teams.

It was Rivalry Round in the state basketball league and the Lady Eagles were in fine form. On Friday night, they were up against fifth-placed Kalamunda Eastern Suns in what some people have named the game of the round.

With the dominant presence in the keyway of Carly Wilson and Faye Muller, the Eagles were able to score many of their points from within the paint.

On the defensive end, the hustle of captain Bindi Foote and the quickness of Kelsey Maffin troubled the Suns resulting in a number of turnovers with the Eagles scoring as a result.

The Eagles lead for most of the match and eventually won 66 to 54.

On Saturday night, they played away against the Perth Redbacks, enjoying an additional rivalry with fellow Australian Opal Squad members playing against one another – Wilson (Eagles) and Renae Camino (Redbacks).

The Redbacks came into the game with sensational form – five wins in a row and holding down third place – but that didn’t faze the Eagles who in recent weeks have combined well to beat high placed teams.

The game was tight from the start but in the second quarter the Eagles picked up the intensity and went on a nine-point-run through the good work of Maffin, Muller and Wilson,

Even though the Redbacks lost Camino to injury during the third quarter, the game was fought out to the end with the Eagles winning 76 to 69.

The Eagles have their last home game for the season on Friday night against the Southwest Slammers, starting at 6.30pm.
