Magic women jump to fifth

THE Mandurah Magic women’s team jumped to fifth position on the State Basketball League ladder after recording two important wins last weekend.

With just two rounds remaining in the home and away season, the Magic’s wins over Rockingham and the Southwest Slammers came at a good time in the lead up to the finals.

Mandurah started their round 17 double header with a 23-point win over the second placed Flames at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex last Friday night.

Magic stalwart Casey Mihovilovich made a welcome return and even though she spent just over eight minutes on court her presence was felt.

She made two assists, one steal and had four rebounds.

The Magic led the Flames from the outset and by the end of the third period had built a 16-point lead.

Led by Shelley Boston’s game-high 32 points the Magic won 89-66.

Kelli Hayward also put in a good effort with 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals and Tarsha Fletcher added 14 to the Magic’s score.

The following night the Magic notched a 19-point win over the Southwest Slammers at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC).

With the Slammers second from the bottom of the table the Magic went into the game as the favourites and the home side lived up to expectations.

By half time the Magic was up by 11 points which blew out to 21 by the end of the third quarter.

Fletcher (19 points) and Boston (17) were again impressive and Gemma Thomas (17) and Hayward (10) were also solid contributors.

After an up and down season Mandurah is fifth with 11 wins and nine losses.

They have a three-point percentage edge over the sixth placed Kalamunda Eastern Suns and are two wins behind Perth in fourth spot.

Next round the Magic women will host the ninth placed Cockburn Cougars at the MARC on Saturday night.

The last time these two sides met was in round nine at the Wally Hagan Stadium and the Magic won 67-53. Even though their finals aspirations were shot long ago, the bottom of the table Magic men showed plenty of fighting spirit last weekend to record their third win of the season.

After a disappointing 32-point loss to the 11th placed Flames away from home last Friday night the Magic turned it around the following night to record a 31-point win at home over the Slammers.

It was the Slammers, who are second from the bottom of the ladder, ninth loss in a row.

The win was set up after a 36-24 opening term in favour of the Magic.

By the end of the third period the Magic led by 32 points.

Led by Tom Remmerswaal (23 points), Andrew Bowman (17), Aaron Trahair (14) and Kane Thompson (14), the home side won 113-82.
