Week 17 PowerPlayer of the Week

The State Basketball League has released the Week 17 PowerPlayer of the week awards. Each week thanks to PowerPlay Sports one Women’s and one Men’s SBL player is awarded the SBL PowerPlayer of the week award. The winner receives a $50 voucher for PowerPlay Sports in Subiaco.

Week Seventeen’s winner is new Sydney Uni Flames recruit Deanna Smith. Smith led her Perry Lakes Hawks to a 2-0 weekend with wins over the Lakeside Lightning & Kalamunda Eastern Suns. Against the Lightning Smith had 33 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists shooting 60% for the night. Against the Eastern Suns Smith knocked down 40 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists while shooting 62% for the night.

Also in strong consideration was Mandurah Magic star Shelley Boston who led her side to a 2-0 weekend. Against the Flames Boston led the way with 32 points and 9 rebounds and 50% shooting. Boston was strong the next night against the Slammers with 17 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists.

Others in consideration for the Week 17 award were Sandra Faye Muller-Garner (Eagles), Emily Fielding (Eastern Suns), Kaye Tucker (Flames), Shelley Boston (Magic), Emma Pass (Cougars), Kate Malpass (Tigers), Elizabeth Lennox (Slammers), Brooke Hiddlestone (Redbacks), Elizabeth Cooke (Senators) & Samantha Norwood (Eastern Suns).

In the Men’s competition there were many stand-outs, ultimately the winner was Alonzo Hird (Goldfields Giants) for his leading effort in the ultimate SBL rivalry. Hird led his Giants past the Geraldton Buccaneers with 25 points, on 73% shooting, while pulling down 11 rebounds. The Giants won the contest 116-110 almost cementing a crucial 2nd spot over the Buccaneers.

Adrian Majstrovich (Eastern Suns) & Tom Garlepp (Hawks) were also closely considered. Majstrovich led his side to a 1-1 weekend with 35.5 points and 8 rebounds per game. Garlepp led his Hawks to a 2-0 weekend with 23 points, 13 rebounds & 4 assists per game.

Others that were considered for the award were Stephen Weigh (Eagles), Ben Thompson (Eagles), Joseph Harrel Jr (Flames), Jarrad Prue (Lightning), Luke Meyer (Buccs), Bryce Burch (Cougars), Vincent James (Slammers), Chris Lynch (Redbacks) & Jeffrey Dowdell (Wolves).
