Senators stir in a thriller

THE Stirling Senators initiated a stirring comeback to engineer a one-point victory over a stunned Geraldton side in the weekend’s State Basketball League action.

Despite entering the clash with an inferior record to the fourth-placed Buccaneers, the Senators overcame the odds and the long trip to steal a thrilling 95-94 win.

The Buccaneers started brightly, racing out to a 31-20 lead and looking to blow the game open in front of their home fans.

But the Senators steadied in the second term with some accurate outside shooting, nailing five three-pointers for the quarter to cut the gap to nine at the main break.

It was immediately after the interval when the visitors began to take control of the match, led by their superstar Ed Morris Jnr, who was starting to find his range with his shot.

The Senators restricted Geraldton to just 12 shot attempts for the quarter, with their defence the key as they levelled the scores going into the final term.

Stirling had to overcome the travel fatigue factor and the home fans to prevail, and were able to do just enough to sneak home for a win by the barest of margins.

Morris Jnr underlined his reputation as one of the premier players in the competition, scoring a game-high 34 points to go with 12 rebounds in a match-winning display.

Chris Dodd (17 points) and Warwick Bird (12) provided strong support in the upset victory.

The win makes it three from the last four for the seventh-placed Senators.

They host the Perry Lakes Hawks and travel to play the Perth Redbacks this weekend for the final round of the SBL regular season.

The Senators women’s side, who had a bye at the weekend, also come up against the Hawks and Redbacks to complete the season.
