Magic eyes off the finals

TO SEAL a spot in the finals the Mandurah Magic women’s team will need to win their last home and away game tomorrow night.

After defeating Cockburn by 17 points at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre last Saturday night, the Magic secured fifth position on the State Basketball League ladder at the end of round 18 - one win ahead of Kalamunda and Lakeside in sixth and seventh spot.

If the Magic do lose to Wanneroo at home tomorrow night their stronger percentage would see them scrape into the top six.

But to be sure, and to take good form into the finals, the Magic will be looking to extend their winning streak to four in a row.

Last Saturday the Magic notched their 12th win of the season with a solid 76-59 victory over the Cougars.

All tied up after the first period, the Magic upped the anti in the second to take a six-point lead into half time.

They increased this lead to eight by the end of the third quarter and then ran away with the game in the final term.

Shelley Boston top scored with 20 points, Katie Reed added 16 and had seven assists and Kelli Hayward shot 14 points and created six assists.

Tomorrow night the Magic will again play at home to host the eighth placed Wanneroo Wolves.

The last time the two ides met was in round seven with the Wolves winning 78-68 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

With 10 wins and 10 losses and just one win out of the top six, Wanneroo will also have plenty of motivation to win tomorrow night.

Despite being on the bottom of the table, the Mandurah Magic men showed plenty of fight in their round 18 match against the third placed Cougars.

Massive underdogs going into the match, the Magic trailed the Wolves by seven points at half time but squared the scores by three-quarter time.

But the Wolves finished the game stronger to win by four points.

In the 105-109 loss the Magic’s Kane Thompson top scored with 26, Tom Remmerswaal shot 21 points and Shaun Bennison and Ben Caporn chipped in with 18 each.

The Magic men will play their final game for the 2009 season tomorrow night against the Wolves at home.

The last time they met in round seven the Wolves won 99-84.
