Foul shooting could prove costly deep in play-offs

WITH so much at stake in the play-offs, the Goldfields Giants can ill afford another disastrous foul shooting display like Saturday night against Kalamunda.

The Giants’ free-throw percentage fell to just 34 per cent against the Eastern Suns with 11-of-32 successful.
Those 21 misses could prove soul-destroying in a championship game, which is now just two wins away.

Giants coach Stephen Charlton was at a loss to explain the horrible foul shooting, which included 14 straight misses in the first half.

Import Alonzo Hird was a serial offender, missing eight straight shots before nailing his final two of the game with just 12 seconds remaining and the win already assured.

“At half-time we didn’t have a foul shot percentage, we were 0-of-14 which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before and I don’t ever want to see it again,” Charlton said.

“It was one of those things and they talk about it in sports like golf and football, people get the yips and it gets contagious.

“For a team to be 0-of-14 is ridiculous, there’s no explanation for it.

“Alonzo had 16 boards and scored in the mid-20s again and was very dominant, but he’s probably shot himself out of a 35-point game.”
