Magic ready for semi final stoush

MANDURAH Magic is through to the women’s State Basketball League semi finals.

The Magic advanced to the next stage of the finals after beating Perth by 16 points at Belmont Oasis last Friday night.

It was the Magic’s second win over the Redbacks in a best of three quarter final series.

A strong opening quarter from the Magic set up the win.

They were 11 points up by the end of the first period.

The Redbacks fought back in the second term to reduce the Magic’s buffer to five but the visitors scored 27-15 to take a 17-point lead into the final period.

The Magic held on in the final quarter to record an 83-67 victory.

Although the Magic had 10 more turnovers than the Redbacks they dominated possession and in other statistics.

The Magic had seven more assists, were 6-0 up in blocks and had 19 more rebounds.

Shelley Boston top scored with 23 points and she also pulled in 13 rebounds and made three blocks.

Gemma Thomas was also impressive with 15 points and Casey Mihovilovich and Tarsha Fletcher each scored 14.

The win follows the Magic’s 86-59 win over Redbacks on July 25.

Magic will now focus their attention to Perry Lakes, who they will meet tomorrow night in the opening semi final.

The Perry Lakes Hawks advanced to the semi finals after knocking the Wanneroo Wolves out of the finals in two games.

In the opening game the Hawks won 88-71 and in the second they beat the Wolves by 14 points.

Again a best of three, the first semi between the Magic and Hawks will be played at Perry Lakes Stadium.

Games two and three (if required) will also be contested at Perry Lakes Stadium next Friday and Saturday.

The Hawks finished the home and away season on top of the SBL ladder while the Magic placed fifth.

The Magic is one of just three teams to have claimed victory over the impressive Hawks outfit.

In round 10 the Hawks won 74-43 at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, however two rounds later it was a different story with the Magic claiming a 67-56 win.
