Lightning set to strike against Hawks

Two times SBL Champions the Lakeside Lightning will head into Saturday night's Grand Final against the Hawks as favourites having claimed the minor premiership with a 22-4 record. Make no mistake though; this game will be a thriller!

The Lightning are also coming of what Head Coach Andy Stewart describes as one of the best wins in the clubs history at Geraldton in Week One of the Semi Finals.

"We actually sat around and spoke about the fact that we put it in one of our best five games ever" Stewart said.

"To travel there with three of our top eight players out of action and our number one scorer, we knew we were going to push up hill and it was just a phenomenal game, phenomenal effort."

The Hawks are coming off an equally impressive series after being one of the first teams to win a Semi-Final series in Kalgoorlie this decade (against the 21-5 Giants) and are quietly confident of swooping on the Lightning.

"We've just got to keep doing our thing" said Hawks Head Coach Dion Dagostino.

"We're happy for people to think Lakeside will walk away with it and we'll peg away and just be relentless for the whole game, be physical where we can and get the job done."

Lakeside Lightning Captain Jarrad Prue praised the Lightning's program. He pointed out their behind the scenes people and their mentor in Head Coach Andy Stewart as the reason behind their success year in year out.

"Our team on paper, there's a lot of young guys and you wouldn't think we would be near the top of the ladder" said Prue.

"Year in year out we have a high turnover and Andy (Stewart) always gets the best out of the players."

Perry Lakes Hawks star and new Adelaide 36er Tom Garlepp was ready for a tight contest.

"It's got a lot to do with scouting; each matchup is pretty hard to call this game. It'll come down to who's done the most preparation and who plays with the most intensity...that will decide each matchup".

Extra inspiration will be on hand for the Hawks with 2009 being the last SBL Grand Final to be held at the home of Basketball in WA - Perry Lakes, also the home of the Hawks.

"To win the Grand final at a home game coaching against Lakeside will be a fairytale. If we can get it done it'll definitely be one to remember for the boys and myself." Dagostino said.

"We're actually bringing down chainsaws so as soon as the game's finished we will all take a part of the court so we never have to play there again" joked a light hearted Stewart when discussing the last game at the iconic, yet ailing home of Basketball in WA.

Tickets for the game sold out in record time with the public snapping them up in just eight minutes when they went on sale Tuesday morning.

You can tune into a live broadcast of the game from 7:15pm on 91.3 SportFM either via radio or their online streaming partner PerthNow.
