Magic women lose grand final (From Mandurah Mail)

AIMING for their first women’s State Basketball League premiership, the Mandurah Magic lost the grand final to the Willetton Tigers by 10 points at Perry Lakes Stadium last Friday night.

The Magic started the grand final better and at the end of the opening period were four points up.

But the Tigers fought back in the second quarter and outscored the Magic 22-10 to take an eight-point lead into half time.

Spurred on by coach Brooke Burns the Magic rallied in the third quarter to reduce the deficit to six but the Tigers finished the game stronger, shooting 22-18 to win the 2009 title 73-63.

The Magic had nine more turnovers than the Tigers.

Ashley Gilmore did most of the damage for the Tigers, shooting a game-high 21 points.

She also made four steals and pulled in nine rebounds.

Kate Malpass was also impressive for the victors with 17 points, five assists, four steals and eight rebounds as was Courtney Hargreaves (12 points) and Renee Matthews (10 points).

For the Magic Shelley Boston top scored with 15 points; she also had 10 rebounds.

Gemma Thomas was Magic’s next best with 14 points, four steals and eight rebounds and Kelli Hayward scored 12 points.

This year’s premiership loss was the fourth time the Magic women have lost the grand final.
