The Perth Redbacks’ 2013 Western Australian Basketball League Women’s D-League champions were re-presented their Grand Final Trophy at the recent Redbacks v Shanghai Sharks International game.
This was the first championship win since the Redbacks last Western Australian Basketball League title in 2008, also by the then D-League Women’s team.
In a highly successful qualifying round season the Redbacks’ women had a strong 11 win, five loss record.
However, despite this they were in third-place in the Northern Conference and therefore in a perilous ‘sudden-death’ situation of having to win all four finals to secure a Championship.
Their first finals game was a tight affair against the Northern Conference fourth-placed Wanneroo Wolves, which they won 69 to 64.
They won their qualifying final game comfortably against the Southern Conference second-placed Lakeside Lightning 56 to 42.
Their successful finals campaign continued with a low-scoring 54 to 46 preliminary-final win against the second-placed Northern Conference Kalamunda Eastern Suns.
Their grand final 63 to 60 win was against the first-placed Northern Conference Perry Lakes Hawks.
This game went right down to the last second in which a ‘wing and prayer’ half-court shot from the Hawks, that was in line and would have forced the game into extra-time, dropped perilously short.
The Perth Redbacks congratulates players Emily Harris, Alix Hayward, Jessica Hughes, Nadia Italiano, Jessica Jakens, Kristy Jedrzejewski, Gabby O’Sullivan and Catherine Tinley along with head coach Stuart Budd, Assistant Coach Tracey Hughes and Manager Christine O’Sullivan on this fine achievement.
The club looks forward to a positive future with such young up and coming talent coming through the women’s basketball development programme.
