Thirty teams comprising eight sections began playing in Bowls North's Women's Open Pairs championship on Tuesday (Tues Feb 26 ). at the North Launceston and Invermay Bowls Clubs. The winners from these games then went onto Wednesday's (Feb 27) knock-out and grand finals at North Launceston
With greens running at a slow 13.25 seconds due to the wet weather, both semi-finals went down to to the last ends. The close results indicate how well the players adjusted and adapted to the slippery and damp conditions.
Cosgrove Park's Ruby Jamieson and Margaret Woodiwiss defeated Invermay's Rebecca Quail and her grandmother Gwen Lodge by two shots to head into the grand final. On the 20th end the Invermay pair were holding by a shot 18 - 17. Jamieson and Woodiwiss picked up two shots on the last end to win 20 - 18
In the other semi-final the composite team of Courtney Hobbs (North) and Maureen Zoon (East) and Invermay's Kym Saunders and Nicole Smith were also level 17 - 17 going into the last end. It was a measure for the decider and Hobbs and Zoon made it through winning 20 - 19.
Hobbs and Zoon came out firing in the 21-end grand final and were never headed. They combined well, out- bowling their opposition to take the title on the 20th end by fourteen shots 23 - 9.
