Tribute to Ellis Thornton
ELLIS THORNTON , OAM, 1923-2012.
Finley has lost a respected bowler in Ellis Thornton ,Who passed away on Thursday evening.
Ellis had a long and success career, both as an administrator and as an outstanding player. He was a club director for 23 years, during which time he served as a President, Secretary, Treasurer, Bowls Secretary and general duties , Including being a vigorous club delegate to the Association. During his presidential reign, Ellis was responsible for the consolidation of the club’s finances through his Initiative and Leading by example .Ellis was club champion on 6 occasions, as well as being part Of club team championships Life membership was bestowed upon him in 1994.His contribution has been an excellent one to the Bowling Club. Many people would also recognise the part played by Ellis with Cricket and The football club in the Murray competitions. He was an outstanding cricketer and a fair footballer but an outstanding administrator of both sports .He was made a life member of each club, in recognition of his involvement and contribution to furthering the sport .Ellis carried out Rotary charter ,”Service above self”, in an exemplary fashion .He carried out the duties of every position within the structure of the club. He conducted the Rotary Bowls Day for 22 years , as the club’s main source of income. These funds were spent wisely within the community , so everyone was a recipient of this bowls even.Ellis’s activity in Rotary resulted in him receiving a Paul Harris Fellowship – Rotary highest honour. The contribution that Ellis made to the town and district were Fully recognised when he was awarded an OAM in 2008.
The Funeral will be held on Tuesday , 4 th December at 11 o’clock from the
Presbyterian Church .Deepest sympathy is extended to Beth and the family members.
We have lost a true sportsman and a great friend to everyone.
