Umpire Education

The Canterbury Hockey Association's umpire education program provides the opportunity for new and developing umpires to attend courses & seminars and receive mentoring so as to become a better umpire.  Whether someone who is new to sport simply looking for some basic knowledge to umpire on behalf of a team to highly experienced umpires wanting to enhance their existing skills, the CHA umpire education program has something for all umpires.

CHA will announce its calendar for delivery of further courses for 2009 in the near future.  This calendar will be listed on this web page once available and registration forms for each of the courses will also be available from this web page.

Umpire Seminars
In addition to the above courses, CHA also delivers seminars that are generally one-two hours presentations relating to a specific aspect of umpiring the sport, generally presented by high level umpires from Canterbury.  Dates of seminars for 2009 will be listed on this web page as they are scheduled.

Mentoring
Attending courses and seminars can provide an umpire with the knowledge to umpire the sport, but it is not until that knowledge is put into practice that an umpire gains an understanding of what it is they need to know and how to apply that knowledge.  For that reason umpires should have a mentor, someone who can attend the occasional match, provide feedback, suggestions and allow for the discussion of ideas.  Any umpires wanting a mentor are asked to contact Chris Leslie, CHA CoachForce Hockey Officer.
