Competitions Overview

One of the major functions of the Canterbury Hockey Association is to deliver competition opportunities for its affiliated members (i.e. clubs and schools) to enter teams in and compete for the title of Canterbury champions. The competitions currently delivered at various stages throughout each calendar year are (click on the title of any competition to view that competition's web page):

Canterbury Senior Competition
The premier competition in Canterbury for open age players. This competition includes the Canterbury Premier League (CPL) for men and women, as well as a number of lower divisions for players of various ability levels.  In addition to the CPL through to Division 5 grades played on weekends, there is also Mid Week divisions (men on Mondays and women on Tuesdays) and a Grass Grade played on Saturdays.

Canterbury Youth Competition
Restricted to players under the age of 18 years (as at the start of the calendar year in any year of competition), the Youth Competition caters for players typically at secondary school.  Matches are played during the winter season on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons/evenings.

Canterbury Junior Competition
Regarded as one of New Zealand's best hockey competitions for junior players that has a proven track record of fostering the development of primary school-aged players, the Junior Competition offers 6-a-side, 8-a-side and 11-a-side options to young players.  Matches are played Saturday mornings during the winter months. 

Canterbury Masters Competition
The Masters Competition is delivered in the summer months and provides an opportunity for players over the age of 30 (women) and 35 (men) to compete with their peers against teams of a similar age.  Matches are played on Thursdays. 

Super Six Competitions
The Canterbury Hockey Association hosts a range of 6-a-side half field competitions during the year catering for most age groups and abilities.  These are:
South Island Super Six - for senior and secondary school players in preparation for the Canterbury Senior Competition, delivered over one weekend in March of each year
Canterbury Super Six - for senior and secondary school players in preparation for the Canterbury Senior Competition, typically delivered on Monday evenings in February and March of each year
Junior Super Six - for primary school players in preparation for the 11-a-side Junior Competition, typically held ove rtwo days in the first week of the April school holidays of each year
Summer Social Hockey - for anyone that wants to enjoy some hockey on a summer evening, this program provides options for primary, intermediate and senior players on Monday or Tuesday nights

CHA Competitions By-Laws
Identifies the laws applied to all CHA competitions as adopted by the CHA Board. 

Hockey New Zealand Association To Association Player Transfer Form
Any player transferring to Canterbury from another province in New Zealand or leaving Canterbury for another province must ensure this form is completed in full and submitted to Hockey New Zealand before they play any matches within their new province.  

CHA Club To Club Player Transfer Form
Any player transferring from one club/school within Canterbury to another within Canterbury must ensure this form is completed in full and submitted to the CHA office before they play any matches for their new club.

CHA Club To Club Player Temporary Transfer Form
Any player seeking a temporary transfer to play in an additional competition for an alternate cub/school because the club/school to which they are registered will not be entering (or in special circumstances where a player is on loan to another club/school for any reason) must ensure this form is completed in full and submitted to the CHA office before they play any matches for the additional club/school.
