The junior representative programme runs through term 3 and culminates in representative tournaments played during the September School Holidays. Canterbury has a proud tradition in these tournaments and are the current holders of the Collier Trophy, the premier national tournament for girls. Coaches for A & B teams are appointed early in the season so that the selectors get plenty of opportunity to watch games and look for emerging talent.

Under 13 A & B Teams:
To be selected for a Canterbury U13 A or B teams players may be in school year 8 or below and turn 13 or younger in the year of the tournament. Those who turn 14 in that year are not eligible.
Canterbury Under 13 A Boys – The sole focus in selecting this side is to choose the team most capable of winning the under 13 national tournament (Hatch cup). These players will almost always be playing premier turf grade hockey, most will be in school year 8 and have several years hockey experience. They will compete for the Hatch Cup in the national under 13 tournament in Invercargill from October 4th– 10th. Other games with dates: Blenheim 8-9th August, Ashburton 16th August, Timaru 6th September, Christchurch Tournament 12-13th September.
Canterbury Under 13 B Boys – this team is made up of players who were not quite up to the ability level of the A team but are considered to be of representative standard. Players are usually in school year 7 or 8 and are playing premier turf grade. The team will compete in the McGrath Trophy tournament which is held in Rotorua from September 27th-30th. Their other games are in Greymouth 8-9th August, Ashburton 16th August, Timaru 6th September and Christchurch 12-13th September.
Canterbury A Girls – These are the best primary girl players available and are chosen from the premier turf competition. The strongest team possible is chosen with the aim to defend the Collier trophy which Canterbury has held for the last 2 years. The Collier Trophy tournament this year will be held Nelson from October 4th-10th. Other games are in Blenheim 1-2nd August, Timaru 16th August, Ashburton 6th September, and Christchurch 12-13th September.
Canterbury B Girls - this team is made up of players who were not quite up to the ability level of the A team but are considered to be of representative standard. The team will compete in the McGrath Trophy tournament in Rotorua from October 1-3rd although there is a chance that they may be invited to the Collier tournament in Nelson instead. Other games are Greymouth 8-9th August, Timaru 16th August, Ashburton 6th September and Christchurch 12-13th September.
Trial Process A & B Teams:
Attendance at the A & B team trials is by invitation only and invitations will be handed out by 13th June. Skills assessments for A & B teams will be held at St Margarets on Saturday 20th June (Boys) and Sunday 21st June (girls). Times of these trials will be advised. Final game trials will be held at Nunweek Turf on June 27th from 5 pm. Sixteen players are selected for both the A & B teams and 3 non-travelling reserves are also named. Teams will be announced on the CHA website on Tuesday 30th June.
Participation in a representative programme is a big commitment for players and parents.
In addition to the tournament schedule representative teams usually have 2 practices per week in the weeks leading up to tournament. If you are invited to trials please consider carefully whether you can commit to the entire programme before you accept the invitation and attend trials. If you are not able to commit then you should not attend trials.
Development Teams – Girls and Boys
To be eligible for selection in Development teams players must be school year 7 or below and turn 12 yrs or younger in the year of the tournament. Players selected for these teams are playing 11 aside or super 8 grade hockey and showing very good potential. Boys and Girls development teams attend the South Island Festival of Hockey in Oamaru from October 2-5th (Boys) and 5-8th (Girls). They also play games in Ashburton/Timaru August 16th, Greymouth (Boys DS only) 22-23rd August, Blenheim August 29-30th Timaru/Ashburton September 6th and Christchurch September 12-13th
Development Trainings Squads – Girls and Boys
These teams are not afforded official representative status. They are designed to give promising young players quality coaching and 11 aside games to prepare them for playing representative hockey in the future. To be eligible for these teams players must be in school year 6 or less and turn 11 yr or younger this year. They play games in the Christchurch Tournament on September 12-13th and may play other games if they can be arranged
Trial Process – development teams
Trials for development Teams will be held at St. Margarets College on July 25-26th Clubs and schools will be invited to nominate players for these trials. Trials run over 2 days. After skills assessments on day one the best players (usually about 40) will be invited back for mini-games on day 2. Development teams include 16 players, with 3 non-travelling reserves also named. Training squads have 14 players. The final teams will be announced on the CHA website on 28th July. Players must be committed and available to play throughout the full representative programme, including practices and lead-up games as well as tournament. Clubs are asked to only nominate players who are able to make this commitment and not to send players along to trials for the experience.
