While most hockey in Canterbury is played on artificial turfs, there are still some grades that play on grass fields.  There is a winter grass grade played on Saturday afternoons where players enjoy the extra challenge presented by the grass and there are also some junior grades that play on grass on Saturday mornings.  Many hockey followers believe that the grass surface provides the better development opportunity for young players as the surface requires the development of better skill levels to achieve success.
