The Canterbury Senior Women's team, generally referred to as the Canterbury Senior B Women's team given the Canterbury Cats are in effect the A team, contests the Hockey New Zealand National Senior Tournament on an annual basis each September.
The philosophy in selecting this team is to select the next group of players beneath the Canterbury Cats as the primary focus for this team is to win the national title on offer.
The only restriction on player eligibility for this team from a Hockey New Zealand perspective is that no more than three players may be selected by a province who have also played in the National Hockey League in that year. Given the two tournaments (National Hockey League and National Senior Tournament) occur within one week of each other it is very uncommon for players to participate in both tournaments. From a Canterbury Hockey Association perspective player eligibility is restricted to players who play for the highest ranked team of their club/school in the Canterbury Hockey Association's Senior Competition.

2009 Squad Selection Process
The process is open, in that all interested players from within Canterbury who meet the eligibility criteria identified above are entitled to trial. Interested players are invited to email their expression of interest to Greg Clark (email: development@hockeycanterbury.co.nz) or Sally Moorfield (email: moorfield@paradise.net.nz).
The selectors for this squad are Sally Moorfield (coach), Aaron Forde (assistant coach), Shirley Haig and Chris Leslie. It should be noted that Chris Leslie will not attend the two trial sessions that have been scheduled. However, in the process of observing players in relation to selecting the Canterbury Cats, Chris has observed and has a knowledge of the players that will trial and can provide input to the selection process on that basis, in the same way that all selectors will apply their knowledge of players from the local competition.
The two scheduled trials will occur on Thursday, July 23 and Thursday, July 30. Both trials will take place at Porritt Park from 6pm.
It is preferred that all interested players seeking selection attend both trials, however if this is not possible then this must be communicated to Sally Moorfield (email: moorfield@paradise.net.nz). As selectors will base their final selections on both local competition form and performance in the trials, it will be at the discretion of the selectors to decide if a player who misses one or both trials will be considered/selected.
The selectors reserve the right to identify players after the first trial that are not of a suitable ability to progress to the second trial.
A Training Squad will be named by Tuesday, August 4, with the final Tournament Squad of 16 players to be named as soon as practical after August 4. If the selectors see no need for a Training Squad and feel comfortable naming the final Tournament Squad by Tuesday, August 4, then that will occur.
