The Canterbury Under 21 Women's hockey team that contests the Hockey New Zealand National Under 21 Tournament each May is a regional team that represents the Canterbury region as defined by Hockey New Zealand. This means that the team is selected from the best eligible players in the five provincial associations within the greater Canterbury region - Canterbury, Malvern, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and the West Coast.
The philosophy in selecting this team is to select the best available players as the primary focus for this team is to win the national title on offer and as a result maximise the number of players from the team that earn national honours. This means that players from outside of the 19-21 age group (i.e. under 18 and below) will be considered.
It is also important for players to recognise that as a result of the philosophy being about achieving the best result possible at the national tournament, the coach is not required to ensure all players receive similar levels of playing time. The coach is expected to utilise the available players as best as possible to ensure the best result possible and if this means some players receive less playing time than others across the week of national tournament, then that decision is supported by the Canterbury Hockey Association.
Player eligibility stipulates a player may turn 21 in the year of the tournament, but anyone who is older than this (i.e. turns 22 or older in the year of the tournament) is not permitted to play.

Summer Training Program
The Canterbury Hockey Association is delivering a Summer Training Program for all players, male and female, that are interested in trialing for the 2010 Canterbury Under 21 teams. The first session of this program is to take place on Tuesday, November 17 at Porritt Park, and will include an information session about the Program.
Sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6.00 pm., commencing November 17 at Porritt Park. The first session will provide further information about the program followed by a game. The sessions are part of a strategy to increase the length of training and preparation time for the Under 21 representative season and ensure players are physically and mentally ready for the trials in 2010.
These sessions will be targeting areas such as technical development, improved tactical awareness, physical conditioning and fitness.
Players considering trialing for the 2010 Under 21 Canterbury teams are encouraged to attend this Program.
Craig Reynolds and Reuben Koorey will be the primary coaches in the delivery of this Program.
Any queries regarding this Program should be directed to contact Greg Clark, CHA Development Manager
