The Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) selects two representative teams at the Under 18 Girls' level each year.
The Under 18 A Girls' team is the highest team at this level, with the best players at the Under 18 level selected to contest the Hockey New Zealand Premier Girls' National Tournament. The philosophy in selecting this team is to pick a group of players that collectively have the best chance of winning the Under 18 Girls' national title. However, there is still a development focus to the team and in attempting to achieve a national title it is expected that all players in the team receive a reasonably equal amount of game time so that all players experience high level competition and can continue along the high performance pathway in the future.
The other team selected is the Under 18 B Girls' team and is selected on the basis of identifying talented players that are not ready for the A team just yet, but are likely to make that team in a subsequent year or have the potential with further development to make the Under 21 team in the future. The focus of this team is therefore development and all players selected will receive reasonably equal game time at the Hockey New Zealand Under 18 Championship Tournament. In some instances players from the Under 16 level who miss selection in the Under 16 A Girls' team and that it is believed would gain more benefit from playing against slightly older opposition may be offered the opportunity to play for the Under 18 B Girls' team as opposed to the Under 16 B Girls' team.
Player eligibility stipulates a player may turn 18 in the year of the tournament, but anyone who is older than this (i.e. turns 19 or older in the year of the tournament) is not permitted to play.

The Hockey New Zealand National Under 18 Girls' Championship Tournament for 2009 will be held in Tauranga from Monday, 6 July to Saturday, 11 July (inclusive). The Canterbury team will likely fly in (5 July) and out (12 July) of Auckland and drive from Auckland to Tauranga return.
Trials
The trial process will involve three trial games across the initial three trials to allow the selectors to gauge the ability of all players in attendance. The selectors reserve the right to eliminate any players deemed to not be of a desired ability level from the trial process at the conclusion of each trial game.
Following the three trials a training squad of at least 20 players will be announced for the Under 18 A Girls' team for 2009.
A selection of players that do not make the Under 18 A Girls' training squad will be invited to a fourth trial (date to be confirmed) that will be used to finalise an Under 18 B Girls' training squad for 2009, with this trial likely to include selected Under 16 players who missed selection in the Under 16 A team and who are believed would benefit from playing at the Under 18 level.
Following this trial a training squad of at least 16 players will be announced for the Under 18 B Girls' team for 2009.
