The Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) selects at least two representative teams at the Under 16 Boys' level each year.
The Under 16 A Boys' team is the highest team at this level, with the best players at the Under 16 level selected to contest the Hockey New Zealand Premier Boys' National Tournament. The philosophy in selecting this team is to pick a group of players that collectively have the best chance of winning the Under 16 Boys' national title. However, there is still a development focus to the team and in attempting to achieve a national title it is expected that all players in the team receive a reasonably equal amount of game time so that all players experience high level competition and can continue along the high performance pathway in the future.
The next team selected at this level is the Under 16 B Boys' team and is selected on the basis of identifying talented players that are not ready for the A team just yet, but are likely to make that team in a subsequent year or have the potential with further development to make the Under 18 or the Under 21 team in the future. The focus of this team is therefore development and all players selected will receive reasonably equal game time at the Hockey New Zealand Under 16 Championship Tournament. (In some instances players from the Under 16 level who miss selection in the Under 16 A Boys' team and that it is believed would gain more benefit from playing against slightly older opposition may be offered the opportunity to play for the Under 18 B Boys' team as opposed to the Under 16 B Boys' team.)
The final team(s) that may be selected at this level are Under 16 Development teams. These teams are effectively training squads comprising players not of a suitable ability to make a Canterbury team to attend a national tournament, but viewed as prospects for future Canterbury teams. The main focus of these teams is development via attendance at squad practice sessions. Where possible these teams may attend appropriate tournaments, with these tournaments usually of a South Island nature.
Player eligibility stipulates a player may turn 16 in the year of the tournament, but anyone who is older than this (i.e. turns 17 or older in the year of the tournament) is not permitted to play.

Trials
The trial process will involve a series of skill tests at the first trial (March 26), followed by matches at the two subsequent trials (April 2 and 9) to allow the selectors to gauge the ability of all players in attendance. Due to the number of players making themselves available at this level all players are to attend the first trial on March 26 (with the exception of incumbents in the 2008 Under 16 A and Under 16 B team who may opt to not attend the March 26 trial and join the process on April 2), but the group will then be split across the other two trials to allow for an appropriate number to be in attendance to deliver a meaningful opportunity for each player to display their skills in trial matches.
The selectors reserve the right to eliminate any players deemed to not be of a desired ability level from the trial process at the conclusion of each trial.
Following these three trials a training squad of at least 20 players will be announced for the Under 16 A Boys' team for 2009.
A selection of players will then be invited to attend another trial match to be used to finalise a training squad of at least 16 players for the Under 16 B Boys' team for 2009. Some may also be invited to trial for the Under 18 B Boys' team for 2009 if it is believed to be of benefit to their development.
Selected players will then be invited to attend a final trial to be used to determine players to be included in a Development training squad for 2009.
