Youth Competition

The Canterbury Hockey Association's Youth Competition is open to players of secondary school age, with an upper age limit of Under 18 (i.e. under 18 as at January 1 in the year of competition and therefore permitted to turn 18 during the year).  The divisions within the competition are based on ability.

In terms of playing dates, the Youth Grade season is not quite as long as the Senior competition, but this year will experience an increase in the total number of games up to 18 for the season.  Matches are generally played on Friday nights, although the number of entries requires some divisions to play on Saturdays to ensure all teams are adequately accommodated.

Competition Structure
The first three weeks of grading fixtures will be used to determine the most appropriate competition structure across all of the divisions based on placing teams of a similar ability in each division.

As a result of the grading matches the 18 girls teams have been placed into three divisions of six teams.  In each division the teams will play each other twice as part of the Championship competition and will play each other again in a separate five week Porritt Cup competition that encomapsses the school holiday period.  There are no finals for either of the girls competitions, meaning final placings are determined on positions on the competition points tables at the completion of the scheduled fixtures during the respective round robins.

The 20 boys teams (21 teams were involved in the grading fixtures, but as a result of the margin of victory recorded by Selwyn 4 in their grading fixtures against teams that were determined to be amongst the other top teams, it was decided to remove Selwyn 4 from the Youth Competition and add them to the Senior Competition) have been split into three divisions for the Championship with six teams in Division 1, eight teams in Division 2 and six teams in Division 3.  In addition to the Championship, teams will play a separate four week Porritt Cup competition that encompasses the school holiday period.  Teams have been divided in five divisions, A - E, for this competition, again based on results in grading fixtures.  For both the Championship and Porritt Cup, in all divisions, final placings are determined by the result of playoff fixtures.
