Not that many years ago Hockey New Zealand sanctioned both a North Island and a South Island Super Six Tournament to provide the opportunity for club teams from all other the country to compete in an inter-provincial six-a-side competition prior to the start of the winter season.  Interest in the North Island version dwindled to the point it is no longer included on the annual Hockey New Zealand tournament calendar, but the South Island version remains popular.  Hosted annually in Christchurch, most of the teams are from the Canterbury province, with a few regular entrants from other parts of the island.

2009 South Island Super Six
The 2009 Hockey New Zealand South Island Super Six Tournament was be held at Porritt Park, Christchurch, from March 20 to March 22.  The Carlton Redcliffs club went close to taking all four titles on offer with their teams making all of the finals.  However, in the end they had to be content with three titles, taking the Division One Women's, Division Two Women's and Division Two Men's trophies, with Harewood winning the Division One Men's tournament.
